Giving NLU preferences is a crucial part of CLAT counselling. Candidates have already given admission preferences to the NLUs before downloading the CLAT admit cards. They do not have the opportunity to update the NLU preferences for counselling now. While selecting the NLUs, the following things are considered;
Ranking of national law universities in NIRF Law ranking 2022 and various other ranking parameters;
Marks and rank obtained by the candidate
Previous year CLAT cut-off for selected NLUs
Candidate’s own choice of NLU
The allotment of seats in national law universities will be based on merit cum preference criteria. Since the allotment of seats is announced in five rounds, candidates have three options after each allotment as mentioned below;
Option | Activity |

Option 1 - When candidate accepts seat allotment
If the candidate accepts the allotted seat, he will have to complete the admission process by following the steps mentioned below.
Accept the seat and upload the documents and submit the fees.
The documents submitted by the candidate will be used for his/her verification. The candidate will now have to report to the allotted NLU as per the instructions and complete the admission formalities.
In case of any issues or questions related to documents and fees, candidates must contact the allotted NLU only.
Option 2 - When candidate applies for upgrade/revision
Candidates who exercise this option will agree to accept the allotted seat and also apply for the Revise option. This will make sure that they will not lose the allotted seat. Such candidates will either get a seat in an NLU which is above the current allotted university in the preference order or will retain the current seat.
Candidates opting for this option will have to submit the course fee to the allotted NLU and upload the documents on the CLAT login portal to be considered for revision.
Option 3 - Exiting NLU admission process
If a candidate chooses this option, he/she will not have a claim for any seat allotment from the CLAT consortium. Such a candidate loses the currently allotted seat and is not considered for the subsequent round of seat allotments.
After the final round of seat allotment, candidates will have only two options;
Accept the seat and complete the admission process
Exit the admission process
In this round, there will be no option for upgrading the choices. Candidates who exit the admission process will not be considered for admission.
Candidates who could not secure allotment of seats or those who exercised the exit option will be eligible for a refund.
Candidates who could not secure admission during the counselling will get a 100% fee refund.
Candidates exercising the Exit option and rejecting the allotment will get a refund only after some deduction which is charged as a processing charge.
If the candidate is found ineligble for admission, he/she will get the refund after some deduction.
