ILEC will host discussions in the following key areas:

  • How must law schools evolve to meet the changing needs of industry? What are the policy concessions required for the healthy growth of Legal Education and law institutions?

  • How can industry and academia collaborate in better ways to enhance the level of training in academic programmes? How can they bridge the knowledge gap between theory and practice?

  • What are the key challenges and opportunities for Educators in the Legal Education domain? What are the emerging best practices in pedagogy and curriculum reviews in Legal Education?

  • Globalisation of any economy demands a global perspective. While Indian Legal Education has largely been India-centric for the past 50 odd years, the increasing effects of globalisation and the impact of global issues on the domestic legal framework means it is time for an overhaul. What is that overhaul and how can it be achieved?

Legal Education in India is undergoing a transformation whereby the focus is increasingly shifting towards developing well-trained professionals. The growth of National Law Universities offering Five Year Integrated Law Programmes is symbolic of the transition that has already begun in the Legal Education domain.

The ripple effects of this shift in focus are evident from the fact that many private institutions have started competing with the NLUs by inculcating a broad qualitative approach in their offerings. But is the pace satisfactory? What needs to change? What needs to be done on part of the different stakeholders to ensure that the domain becomes more robust? Where can policymakers intervene to accelerate this shift towards quality?

Sharing insights on ILEC 2017, Mahesh Sarma, Editor, Careers360 says, “This national level event will bring together educators, practitioners and industry players to discuss and debate on how Legal Education can better cater to the changing practices in the domain.” He adds that the insights from the thought leaders and educators will also help in guiding and counselling law aspirants.
