Edited By Aditi Narendra | Updated on Oct 03, 2023 03:29 PM IST

National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a method of ranking adopted by the Ministry of Education to grade institutes providing higher education. This year NIRF 2023 has ranked top 30 Law colleges across India.

For ease of analysis Careers360 divided the colleges as per their location in different zones of the country. In this article, we have only analysed the colleges that fall in the southern zone of the country. The states of Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.

However, none of the top 30 law colleges of south India are from Goa and Kerala.

For the benefit of our readers we have considered law colleges offering only the undergraduate courses of five-year LLB. All the top law colleges of South India as per NIRF 2023 provide a five-year undergraduate law programme.

In this article we analysed the percentage of graduate students, the placement report, the median salary received by the placid students, and the percentage of students who went for higher education for a duration of three years.

The analysis shows the effort of colleges to promote a higher percentage of students graduating over three years. Though the placement percentage of the law colleges in South India is pretty average in 2021-22 the median salary has hardly increased in this period. The average placement and the stagnant median salary have pushed the percentage of students opting for higher education.

The table below shows six law colleges in South India with respective NIRF rankings of 2023.

Average Placements

National Law School of India University and Nalsar University of Law being one of the top-ranked universities show high placement percentages. Here the placement percentage is calculated on the basis of graduated students who are placed in companies, law firms etc. Shanmugha Arts Science Technology & Research Academy despite being in the 15th rank shows excellent placement performance.

However, Alliance University has a poor placement percentage. More than 96 per cent of the batch admitted in 2017-18 graduated in 2021-22. But, the college could place a mere 20 per cent of the batch graduated. This shows a high rate of competent law graduates without a job in 2021-22.

We can possibly conclude from this analysis that the college cannot invite enough competent companies to the college for the placement of the students. There could also be a chance that students were not well versed in legal knowledge to get a job. However, we cannot rule out the fact that some students willingly would not opt for a job. They might be interested in going for a higher education or planning to prepare for some competitive exam.

Law schools of South India guarantee a good percentage of students graduating over a minimum stipulated time period. But, it's important for them to work on their numbers. Poor placements show a higher unemployment percentage in youth with potential which is not good for the economy of the country.
