The popularity of law entrance exams is on the rise as manifested by the huge number of students enrolling for law courses and the changes visible in the law admission landscape.  As a result, there has been a big surge in the number of private law colleges in the country. Some of the popular law entrance exams to get into private law colleges in India include CLAT 2024, LSAT—India, SLAT, AIAT, AP LAWCET, MH CET LAW and TS LAWCET.

Private law colleges offer a variety of law programmes which include 5-year LLB, 3-year LLB, LLM and PhD.

LLB Eligibility Criteria

Before applying for the law programmes, candidates must make sure they fulfil the eligibility criteria for the respective law programmes. Given below is the eligibility criteria for 5-year LLB, 3-year LLB and LLM.

  • 5-year LLB: Candidates must have cleared class 12 with a minimum percentage of passing marks as prescribed by the exam authorities. Students appearing for their class 12 exams can also apply provided they submit their qualifying certificates at the time of admission. 

  • 3-year LLB: Candidates must have cleared graduation in any stream with a minimum percentage of marks as prescribed by the exam authorities. Final year students can also apply provided they submit their qualifying certificates at the time of students.

  • LLM: Candidates must be law graduates having completed either a 3-year LLB or a 5-year LLB course with a certain minimum percentage of marks. Final year LLB students can also apply provided they submit their degree certificate at the time of admission.

Law Entrance Exams for Private LLB Colleges in India

  • CLAT - The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities. At present over 60 private colleges are affiliated with the CLAT. Through these exams, candidates can enrol into 5-year LLB and LLM programmes.

  • LSAT—India - The Law School Admission Test is conducted by the Law School Admission Council and administered by Pearson Vue. Currently 9 colleges are accepting LSAT—India scores. Some of the affiliated colleges include well known names such as Jindal Global Law School, Asian Law School, Alliance University and more. 

  • SLAT -The Symbiosis Law Admission Test (SLAT) is conducted by Symbiosis International (Deemed University) for admission into 5-year LLB programmes of the four Symbiosis Law Schools namely SLS Pune, SLS Noida, SLS Nagpur, and SLS Hyderabad.

  • SLS AIAT - Through SLS All India Admission Test (AIAT) candidates are admitted into the three year LLB and LLM programmes of Symbiosis Law Schools.

  • CUET - The Common University Entrance Test is conducted by the National Testing Agency. Through this exam, candidates can get admission into UG, and PG law programmes of private universities that accept CUET scores. There are separate CUET exams for 

  • AP LAWCET - The Andhra Pradesh Law Common Entrance Test (AP LAWCET ) is conducted by APSCHE. Through this exam, candidates can get admission into 5-year LLB, 3-year LLB, and LLM programmes of participating colleges in Andhra Pradesh. The exam is conducted separately for the three courses. 

  • TS LAWCET - The Telangana Law Common Entrance Test (TS LAWCET) is conducted by TSCHE for admission into 3-year LLB, 5-year LLB and LLM programmes of participating colleges in the state of Telangana. A separate exam is held for all the three courses.

  • MH CET LAW - Another state level entrance exam is the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test Law conducted by the State CET Cell Maharashtra. Through this exam candidates can get admission into 5-year LLB, 3-year LLB and LLM programmes of participating colleges in the state of Maharashtra. The CET cell conducts separate exams for the three exams.
