National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF )is a government-approved ranking for institutions providing higher education. NIRF 2023 ranked the top 30 law colleges across India based on their placement numbers, median salary, percentage of graduated students etc. Careers360 analysed the NIRF 2023 data for all 30 law colleges and made an analysis report on it.
In this article, we have included the top law colleges of India located in the western and central zones of the country. States of Gujarat and Maharashtra are considered the western zone while Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh are located in the central zone of the country. To make it easy for the readers we have only included the colleges which have five-year undergraduate degrees in law. The table below has listed all seven law colleges which come under the western and central zones of India under the NIRF ranking 2023. Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University will be left out of the analysis as it only offers a PG programme in law for two years.
Table 1-NIRF Ranking
College | NIRF Ranking |
Symbiosis Law School | 6 |
Gujarat National Law University | 7 |
Babasheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University | 10 |
Aligarh Muslim University | 14 |
Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow | 21 |
Banaras Hindu University | 22 |
Nirma University | 27 |
The percentage of students who graduated in the minimum stipulated time of five years in all six law schools is high. The percentage of graduated students here is calculated on the number of students who graduate as per the total intake of students. The total intake of students is the sum of students admitted through direct entry and admitted through lateral entry.
Symbiosis Law School is the only college that admitted students through lateral entry in the year of 2017-18. Students who took admission in this year graduated in 2021-2022. Dr Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow is an institute of national importance. It witnessed 100 per cent of its total admitted students graduate over the minimum stipulated time of five years. This shows the academic performance of the college. All the law colleges of Western and Central India ensure quality education and LLB degrees after the completion of the course.
The table below shows the percentage of students who graduated from the top six law colleges of Western and Central India in the minimum stipulated time of five years.

The placement numbers in all colleges are decent except Banaras Hindu University (BHU). The placement percentage of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has gone down in 2021-22 in comparison to 2019-20.
Other colleges like Dr Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow and Nirma University improved their percentage of placed students in 2021-22 when compared to 2019-20.
Dr Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, even after showing a 100 per cent graduation rate in three years could hardly place 60 per cent of its graduated students in 2021-22. Being a national level institute a better performance is expected from it.
Symbiosis Law School which ranks sixth in the NIRF ranking delivers the highest placement percentage in the list of colleges analysed. Yet the placement percentage of the college in 2021-22 was 1.97 percentage points less than its placement percentage in 2019-20. The term percentage points in the article refers to the difference between two percentage values.

Nirma University | 21.31 | 42.07 | 55.56 |
Most of the colleges included in the list provide decent packages to their placed students over a period of three years. However, Nirma University provided a below-average median salary to the students in all three years. Rather than improving on the salary packages, it showed a significant decline in median salary in 2021-22 from 2019-22.
Aligarh Muslim University has witnessed a significant rise in the median salary over three years. The median salary provided by the college in 2021-22 was 2.50 LPA higher than the median salary of 2019-20. This shows the commendable effort of the institute in providing a financially secure future to its students.
Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University did not live up to its expectations in terms of median salary. The salary provided by the institute is pretty average. When the entire batch of the institute graduates, only 60 per cent of graduate students get placed out and receive a median salary of a mere 6.55 LPA. This ratio is not very pleasing.
The table below shows the median salary of the top six law colleges in the Western and Central zones of India over three years. The salary package here is mentioned in lakhs in terms of Indian rupees.

Hardly four per cent of the graduated students of Symbiosis Law School went for higher studies in 2021-22. Banaras Hindu University did not have a single student who opted for higher education in 2020-21. But this data is a bit unpleasant. The entire batch from the institute graduated in the year 2020-21. But hardly eight per cent of them got placed and none of them went to higher education.
What about the rest of the graduated students? We can speculate that some of them went on to prepare for competitive exams, and the students might have also gone for an off-campus placement. But there might be a chance that some of them did not get any job and stayed unemployed.
However, a year later in 2021-22, BHU had the highest number of students opting for higher education. Gujarat National Law University always has shown higher participation of students opting for higher education taking the years 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22 into account.
The table below shows the percentage of graduated students who opted for higher education over a period of three years.
