Eight Indian law schools featured in the QS World University Ranking 2026 for the Law and Legal Studies subject. O.P. Jindal Global University retained its top spot among Indian law universities, ranking 35th globally with a score of 77.6. The National Law School of India University, India’s top law university in the NIRF 2025, secured a rank in the 151-200 range. Other universities include University of Delhi, National Law University Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), SLS Pune, IIT Kharagpur and NALSAR Hyderabad. Globally, Harvard University retained the top position in QS World University Rankings 2026 for the Law & Legal Studies subject.
JNU featured in the QS without having a Faculty of Law department and core LLB and LLM degree programs. The university offers a PhD and MPhil in Law at the Centre for the Study of Law and Governance (CSLG). These programs are multidisciplinary research and policy-oriented with a multidisciplinary nature. Despite this, JNU scores 59.1 in academic reputation, 49.7 in employer reputation, 65.7 in Citations per Paper and 60 in H-index Citations.
Global Rank | University | Overall Score | Academic Reputation | Employer Reputation | Citations per Paper | H-index Citations |
35 | O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) | 77.6 | 88 | 66.4 | 68.1 | 68.8 |
151-200 | National Law School of India University (NLSIU) | N/A | 78.6 | 42.4 | 58.7 | 56.1 |
151-200 | University of Delhi | N/A | 62.8 | 59.9 | 74.7 | 64.8 |
201-250 | National Law University, Delhi (NLUD) | N/A | 71.6 | 64.8 | 41.2 | 32.4 |
251-300 | Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) | N/A | 43.7 | 81.6 | 75.5 | 67.6 |
301-350 | Symbiosis International (Deemed University) | N/A | 57.3 | 54.1 | 64.7 | 61.7 |
351-400 | Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) | N/A | 59.1 | 49.7 | 65.7 | 60 |
351-400 | NALSAR University of Law | N/A | 67 | 41.1 | 54.2 | 51.4 |
Universities participating in QS are allocated a range of ranks instead of exact ranks. For example, if the QS puts a law school in the rank band of 151-200, it means the law school holds a ranking between this range; however, it does not mean that its exact ranking has been determined by the QS. The reason behind this methodology adopted by QS is that many universities tend to score equally high marks, and giving them a certain ranking might cause problems.
The QS World University Rankings for subjects are based on the following parameters:
Academic Reputation: Based on a global survey of academics who nominate institutions demonstrating excellence in the subject.
Employer Reputation: Derived from a worldwide survey of graduate employers, identifying institutions from which they prefer to recruit law graduates.
Citations per Paper: Measures research impact using data from Elsevier Scopus (normalised to account for disciplinary differences; minimum publication thresholds apply to avoid distortions).
H-index Citations: Assesses both the productivity and citation impact of a university’s research output in the field.
International Research Network: Evaluates the diversity and sustainability of international research partnerships.
Compared to last year, the number of Indian law universities in QS rose from five to eight. OP Jindal Global University was the best-ranked Indian law school at number 78. NLSIU Bengaluru, the University of Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, and JNU Delhi were the remaining four universities in the list.
NLU Delhi, NALSAR Hyderabad and Symbiosis International University, Pune are the new additions to the QS Law School Rankings 2026.
Rank | University | Employability | Employer Reputation | Research & Discovery (H-index Citations) | Academic Reputation |
78 | O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) | 64.5 | 66.2 | 64.6 | 79.8 |
201–250 | National Law School of India University | 54.2 | 55.0 | 54.5 | 72.8 |
201–250 | University of Delhi | 65.6 | 57.2 | 70.0 | 63.6 |
251–300 | Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) | 69.5 | 70.3 | 74.1 | 48.6 |
251–300 | Jawaharlal Nehru University | 59.4 | 55.0 | 67.3 | 60.2 |
In the QS World University Rankings 2026 for Law & Legal Studies, Indian law schools fared better compared to the previous year, but the difference between their performance and that of other top universities worldwide is considerable. Although some Indian universities, such as OP Jindal Global University and NLSIU, have reasonably good academic reputations, the overall legal education ecosystem in India seems to lag in several areas, including research, global citations, and employer reputation. The inclusion of eight Indian law schools in this ranking is a sign of the growing integration of Indian legal education with globally accepted benchmarks.
