QS Ranking Bands Explained: What 151–200 or 251–300 Actually Means

Universities participating in QS are allocated a range of ranks instead of exact ranks. For example, if the QS puts a law school in the rank band of 151-200, it means the law school holds a ranking between this range; however, it does not mean that its exact ranking has been determined by the QS. The reason behind this methodology adopted by QS is that many universities tend to score equally high marks, and giving them a certain ranking might cause problems.

QS Law Rankings 2026: Key Parameters and Methodology

The QS World University Rankings for subjects are based on the following parameters:

    • Academic Reputation: Based on a global survey of academics who nominate institutions demonstrating excellence in the subject.

    • Employer Reputation: Derived from a worldwide survey of graduate employers, identifying institutions from which they prefer to recruit law graduates.

    • Citations per Paper: Measures research impact using data from Elsevier Scopus (normalised to account for disciplinary differences; minimum publication thresholds apply to avoid distortions).

    • H-index Citations: Assesses both the productivity and citation impact of a university’s research output in the field.

    • International Research Network: Evaluates the diversity and sustainability of international research partnerships.

The Road Ahead: Can Indian Law Schools Break into Global Top 20?

In the QS World University Rankings 2026 for Law & Legal Studies, Indian law schools fared better compared to the previous year, but the difference between their performance and that of other top universities worldwide is considerable. Although some Indian universities, such as OP Jindal Global University and NLSIU, have reasonably good academic reputations, the overall legal education ecosystem in India seems to lag in several areas, including research, global citations, and employer reputation. The inclusion of eight Indian law schools in this ranking is a sign of the growing integration of Indian legal education with globally accepted benchmarks.
