An LLB, or Bachelor of Legislative Law, is a professional undergraduate law degree that prepares students for careers in the legal profession. The term is derived from the Latin phrase Legum Baccalaureus, where Legum means "laws" and Baccalaureus means "bachelor.” The course provides an understanding of the legal system, constitutional principles, civil and criminal laws, legal procedures, judicial processes, and legal reasoning.
In India, the LLB is regulated by the Bar Council of India (BCI), which prescribes the minimum standards for legal education. Graduates of a BCI-approved law programme can enrol with a State Bar Council and, after qualifying the All India Bar Examination (AIBE), become eligible to practise as advocates. Apart from litigation, an LLB also offers career opportunities in corporate law, judiciary, legal consultancy, public policy, compliance, legal research, academia, and civil services.
The Bar Council of India (BCI) recognises two types of LLB courses in India. Students can choose either course depending on their educational qualifications. These are:
3-Year LLB: A three-year undergraduate law programme is designed for students who have already completed a bachelor's degree in any discipline (such as BA, BSc, BCom, or BTech or equivalent).
5-Year Integrated LLB: This 5-year integrated UG law programme is for students who have completed Class 12. It combines a bachelor's degree with an LLB, leading to integrated degrees such as BA LLB, BBA LLB, BCom LLB, BSc LLB, or BA LLB (Hons.).

Admission to LLB programmes in India is primarily entrance exam-based. National Law Universities, central universities, state universities and private law schools admit students through national, state-level or university-level law entrance tests.
The admission process begins with registration for the entrance examination, followed by the declaration of results and counselling. Candidates who meet the prescribed cutoff are allotted seats based on their rank, reservation category, seat availability, and the college preferences they have filled.
Check the eligibility criteria prescribed by the preferred university or law college.
Register for the relevant law entrance examination, such as CLAT, AILET, MH CET Law, SLAT, TS LAWCET, AP LAWCET, and KLEE.

While admission to most leading law colleges is entrance exam-based, some private universities also offer direct admission based on merit in the qualifying examination.
