There are approximately 22 government law colleges in Tamil Nadu. The government law colleges in Tamil Nadu are offering admissions to various law courses such as a 3-year LLB, integrated LLB, LLM, and Diploma in law. Admissions to government law colleges are granted either through the merits of the qualifying exams or through the entrance test scores. CLAT: The Common Law Admission Test is the most popular law entrance test in India. It is conducted once a year by the Consortium of NLUs. Getting a good rank in the test results in getting admission to top NLUs and other participating universities. One such example of the government law college that accepts CLAT scores is Tamil Nadu National Law University.
CUET: The National Testing Agency conducts the Common University Entrance Test in online mode. It is a national-level entrance test Candidates have to clear the CUET PG exam for admission to LLM programmes offered by top universities. The Central University of Tamil Nadu is the only university in the state to accept CUET PG scores to get admission.
Majority of the the government law colleges in Tamil Nadu offer admission on a merit basis. The Tamil Dr Ambedkar Law University is an example of one such government law college that grants admission to candidates based on the merits of the qualifying examination.
