Having a good score in CLAT 2025 is important as every year around 50000 candidates appear for the Common Law Admission Test but just over 4000 seats are available. Being aware of good score in CLAT 2025 would enable candidates to fine tune their preparations as per the demands of the exam. However, the exact data about what is a good score in CLAT 2025 would be available only after the exam analysis.

The Common Law Admission Test is one of the most competitive law entrance exams and candidates would be keen to know what is a good score in CLAT. Scores obtained in CLAT 2025 would be accepted by National Law Universities (NLUs) participating in the exam and other affiliated colleges. Knowing what is a good score in CLAT 2025 requires some detailed analysis of the previous cut-offs for NLUs, seats offered by them, reservations and various other factors which are important determinants of admission.
As per CLAT 2024 exam analysis and student feedback, the difficulty level of CLAT 2024 question paper was easy. An easier exam results in higher CLAT cut-offs. This means a good CLAT 2025 score would be high. Candidates can check their CLAT 2025 score by logging with their credentials on the official website - consortiumofnlus.ac.in after declaration of CLAT 2025 result. This year, CLAT 2025 is expected to be conducted in the first week of December 2024. Along with a good score, aspirants must also have an understanding of the CLAT rank vs marks dynamics to know into what rank a particular CLAT score translates to.
Analysis of the CLAT 2024 question paper suggests that a good score in CLAT was 80-90. Overall, 90+ was a good score in CLAT 2024 for the general category to get admissions in top 3 NLUs. Similarly, 60-70 is a good score in CLAT exam for SC/ST category. The cut off rank are not expected to change as the NLU preferences of candidates continue to be the same with NLSIU Bengaluru being the top choice. Last year, the exam pattern was revised to 120 marks which changed predictions surrounding a good CLAT score.
The total number of questions in CLAT 2024 had been dropped from 150 to 120. This change impacted the estimates of what constitutes a good CLAT score. The revised CLAT pattern will have implications for overall CLAT cut-offs 2025 as well. Earlier, a score of 100+ (66%) was considered a good score in CLAT. The CLAT 2024 analysis by Harsh Gagrani, Cofounder, LegalEdge suggested, that a score in excess of 90 would be the ideal score to get into top NLUs. A score of 90 out 120 means candidates need to score 75% which is much higher than 66% percent marks required earlier.
A relatively easy paper indicates that a good score in CLAT would be 80-90 marks to get into top 10 NLUs. Tier-2 and tier-3 NLUs have slightly lower cut-offs than the top ones. Still, the difference in cut-off marks of the top five-six NLUs is not as wide as it appears when we look at the earlier. cut-offs in terms of rank. This is due to the intense competition among applicants.
The lower-ranked and new NLUs such as DBRANLU Sonipat have offered admission to students securing 70-72 marks (46-48%) in the past. However, due an easy paper this, a low score in CLAT such as less than 50% may not be sufficient. For top NLUs, there has been a 10 percentage points increase in the expected good score. So, for lower ranked NLUs, a score of 60-65% should be enough, i.e. a score of 72-75 (out of 120)
It is also a matter of the candidate's personal choice in whether to opt for admission in a lower-ranked NLU or try their luck with other law entrance exams where one can get admission into top-ranked law schools like NLU Delhi through AILET, or ILS Pune and GLC Mumbai through MH CET Law. There are many colleges other than NLUs that have better placement records, alumni base, infrastructure etc. So, with low CLAT scores, one may also look for those options.
Coming to CLAT 2024, let’s look at the last year’s general category cut-offs for top-ranked NLUs in India.
Name of law school | CLAT score | Cut off for General Category (Round 1) | |
---|---|---|---|

90+ | 1 | 97 | |
90+ | 6 | 158 | |

75+ | 410 | 694 | |
75+ | 434 | 707 | |
72+ | 591 | 1080 |
Let's look at some key insights and takeaways obtained by analysing CLAT 2024 scores for the top four NLUs.
NLSIU Bengaluru always remains the most preferred NLU among the students. Last year, the closing rank was 99 for general category after third round. The institute has increased seats in the last two years, so cut-offs have gone up accordingly.
The NLSIU Bengaluru cut-off mark which used to be around 68-70% (103-104 marks) earlier has increased marginally. Under the new pattern, students should still try to score around 75% (90-95 marks) or above to secure admission to this university. In case of a reserved category, even 4000 will be a good rank to obtain admission because of lower CLAT cut off marks. The table below describes the cut off rank for each category.
Category | Cut off rank |
---|---|
General | 97 |
EWS | 523 |
OBC | 908 |
SC | 3007 |
ST | 3876 |

Last year, WBNUJS Kolkata's closing rank for the general category was 275 after third round.

The rank list for the top 4 NLUs suggests that students have preferred the NLUs in the following order - NLSIU Bengaluru, NALSAR Hyderabad, WBNUJS Kolkata and NLU Jodhpur
Interestingly, MNLU Mumbai which is new (establishment year - 2014) compared to top-ranked NLUs is also among the student’s preferred list. The general category closing rank for MNLU Mumbai was 562 in 2024, 590 in 2023, 568 in 2022 and 453 in 2021. However, one should also notice that MNLU Mumbai has 63% of seats reserved for Maharashtra-domiciled candidates. This is also a reason why only a few candidates under the open category get admission to this university and thus cut-offs are so competitive.
Name of Law School | Expected Good Score in CLAT 2025 |
---|---|
National Law School of India University | 90+ |
NALSAR University of Law | 90+ |
The West Bengal National University of Juridicial Sciences | 90+ |
NLU Jodhpur | 84+ |
National Law Institute University, Bhopal | 84+ |
Gujarat National Law University | 84+ |
MNLU Mumbai | 82+ |
Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow | 75+ |
HNLU Raipur | 75+ |
National Law University, Odisha | 72+ |
Under the new pattern, candidates should try to score around 90+ marks to get admission to top NLUs.
NLSIU Bengaluru, NALSAR Hyderabad, WBNUJS Kolkata and NLU Jodhpur are the top four NLUs participating in CLAT.
CLAT cut-offs for NLSIU Bengaluru was 98 last year under the general category. So, getting admission with a CLAT rank 200 is difficult unless you have a domicile category reservation for the university.
You can get NLU Odisha, RGNLU, NLU Trichy with general category CLAT rank 1000.
57 may not be a good score for a general candidate. To get into one of the top NLUs, a candidate must score in the range of 90+ marks. However, with 57 marks, a candidate from a reserved category may be able to get admission.
No 33 marks may not be enough to secure admission. However, in NLUs lower down the order, 33 marks may prove to be enough for a reserved category candidate.
Yes. A score of 105 will be enough to bag a seat in a top NLU such as NLSIU Bengaluru.

Hello,
Students who are giving the CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) in 2025 would typically get into college in the same year.
The process usually involves taking the exam, receiving results, participating in counseling or admissions processes, and then starting classes at the chosen law school. Therefore, students taking CLAT in 2025 would likely start their college education in the academic year starting in 2025 or 2026, depending on the specific timelines and admission procedures of the law schools they apply to.
Hope it helps you!
