The most common entrance exam in the field of law is CLAT. The full form of CLAT is the Common Law Admission Test. It is a national level entrance exam which is conducted by the Consortium of National Law universities (CNLU). It is conducted for both undergraduate and postgraduate law courses. It is conducted once in a year in online mode along with application fee of Rs 4,000. The total number of colleges in this exam is 97, and the number of seats available for this exam is 2538. CLAT UG is conducted for 5-year integrated law courses while CLAT PG is conducted for LLM course, which is mostly of one or two years. There is one thing you should keep in mind that for LLB courses, which is basically 3 years, there is no CLAT exam.
Brief about CLAT exam - CLAT is a comprehension-based test to analyse your legal education. For CLAT UG, the paper will consist of five sections, mainly English which includes comprehension, general knowledge for current affairs, legal aptitude, and elementary math. The paper will be Multiple Choice type.
For CLAT PG, the paper will consist of LLB graduation subjects which include Jurisprudence, Administrative law, Constitutional law, Law of Contract, Torts, Family law, Criminal law, property law, company law etc. The questions will be objective type.
Total duration for both CLAT UG and PG exam will be 2 hours.
Eligibility Criteria for CLAT exam - The eligibility criteria for different law courses are -
· For UG - The candidate should have passed 10+2 from a recognized board or university. Even the candidates who are likely to give the last year or qualifying exam are also eligible to apply for CLAT UG. There is no age limit set for this exam. The minimum marks required in the qualifying exam is 45% for general category while for SC/ST candidates, the minimum marks are 40%.
· For PG - There is no age limit set for CLAT PG exam. All you need is to have LLB graduation degree from a recognized college/ university of Bar Council of India. Those who are appearing in last year or final semester are also eligible to apply for the exam. The minimum marks required for this is 50% for general while 45% for SC/ST in graduation.
