The admission criteria for top Tamil Nadu law colleges differ from institution and programme. The best law colleges TN accept the scores of CLAT, AILET and CUET Law Exam to admit candidates to the law programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. 

Entrance Exams for Best Law Colleges in Tamil Nadu

There are many institutes which grant admission to candidates based on entrance exams only. Some of the most accepted entrance exams in private law colleges in Tamil Nadu are CLAT and CLAT PG. Apart from these, Saveetha University also conducts its separate entrance exam for Law. Similarly, VIT Law School also accepts CLAT and AILET entrance exams.

CLAT: The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities. The CLAT scores are accepted for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate law programs offered by 24 national law universities, IIULER Goa and over 60 affiliated colleges.

CLAT PG: The national-level law entrance exam, CLAT PG, is conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) in offline (pen and paper) mode. It is a common entrance test for admission into LLM programmes of participating national law universities. CLAT PG is one of the most competitive law entrance exams in India.

AILET: All India Law Entrance Test, popularly known as AILET is a national-level law entrance exam conducted by NLU Delhi for admission into its 5-year integrated BA LLB, LLM and PhD programmes. 

AILET PG: The All India Law Entrance Test PG is conducted once every year for admission to one-year LLM courses of National Law University, Delhi. The NLU Delhi admissions to LLM programmes are done based on the scores secured by the candidate in the exam. The AILET PG entrance exam is conducted in offline mode at the designated AILET exam centres all over the country.
CUET Law Exam: The Common University Entrance Test Law is conducted by the National Testing Agency. Through this exam, candidates can get admission into UG and PG law programmes of private universities that accept CUET scores.

Direct Admissions

Apart from entrance exams, many private law colleges in Tamil Nadu also accept direct admissions. Law admissions to such institutions are done based on the marks obtained in the qualifying examinations. Generally, the qualifying exam for 5-year LLB is class 12, graduation for 3-year LLB and a bachelor's degree in Law for LLM.

5-year LLB Course

  • Candidates must have completed their Class 12 from a recognised board with at least 45% marks. 

  • There is a relaxation of 3% for reserved categories.

3-year LLB Course

  • Candidates must secure a minimum of 45% marks in the undergraduate degree.

  • There is a relaxation of around 3-5% for reserved categories.

LLM Programme

  • Candidates wanting to pursue an LLM must mandatorily have an undergraduate law degree. Also, candidates must secure a minimum of 50% marks in the Bachelor’s law degree. 

  • There might be a relaxation of around 5%.

PhD Programme 

  • Candidates must have cleared a master’s in law from a recognised university with at least 55% aggregate marks.

The top law colleges in Tamil Nadu attracts high salary packages, with some graduates receiving offers from top legal firms, corporate legal departments and judiciary services. Some of the top law colleges in Tamil  Nadu for placements are SASTRA University Thanjavur, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences and S.R.M. Institute of Science and Technology. According to NIRF 2025 report, the SASTRA University median salary package for UG 5-year programme is Rs. 5.60 LPA. The Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences median package offered during UG 5-year and PG 1-year placements 2024 stood at Rs, 6.15 LPA and Rs. 6.10 LPA, respectively.
