NLUs have been established to improve the quality of legal education in India in line with global standards. While the first NLU was established at Bengaluru in 1987, the number of law universities has grown to 26. NLUs conduct the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) to admit students into the 5 Year Integrated BA LLB, LLM and PhD courses. On the other hand, some NLUs such as NLU, Delhi, conduct their own law entrance test.

The tuition price, security deposit, utility fees, hostel and mess fees are a few of the categories under the NLU structure. While fees under a few heads must be paid in full only at the time of admission into the course, other payments must be paid annually.

The NLU, Delhi fee structure for 2024 has set the annual tuition charge for foreign students from SAARC nations at rupees equivalent to USD 6000. The annual tuition price for international students from non-SAARC countries has been set at the rupee equivalent of USD 12000.

Apart from NLUs, there are also several government law colleges and university departments across India that offer law courses such as Government Law College, Mumbai, and Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. A 3 year LLB course fee in government colleges or a 5 year integrated BA LLB course is comparatively cheaper as one can see in their fee structure.

The tuition fees for foreign students is five times the fee applicable to Indian citizens.
Apart from the NLUs and other government colleges, one can also pursue the study of law in private colleges. There are several private institutions such as Symbiosis law school Pune, Lovely Professional University, Amity University, Christ University and so on, that offer 5 year integrated LLB courses and 3 year LLB courses. The fees in private colleges are usually higher than the fees charged by government colleges.

The programme fee is the sum total of fees under different heads, a few of which are tuition fees, university registration fees, development fee, co-curricular activities etc. The fee mentioned above does not include hostel and residential charges.

There may be slight variations in fees across different NLUs. At NLU Delhi, the approximate fees for a 5 year integrated BA LLB course is 365000 p.a.
Government Law College, Mumbai, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi are some of the government colleges where you can apply for LLB.
