Careers360: Please introduce yourself, and share reasons why you chose this college as your preferred institution for higher education.

Deeksha: I am Deeksha Sood, a practicing advocate specializing in criminal and matrimonial law. I primarily practice in the District Court and also appear before the High Court on certain matters. I chose Manav Rachna because I had heard very positive things about the institution, especially regarding the quality of education, the faculty, and the overall academic environment.

What particularly stood out to me was the university’s safe, healthy, and student-friendly atmosphere. I genuinely appreciated its strict zero-tolerance policy towards ragging, which created a sense of security and comfort for students. The overall ambience of the university, combined with supportive teachers and a disciplined environment, made it feel like a very positive and welcoming place to pursue higher education.

They are always there to support, assist, and mentor students whenever needed, which creates a very encouraging learning environment.

The overall management is also very student-friendly and approachable, making the atmosphere comfortable and welcoming. Beyond academics, the university offers a variety of co-curricular activities and student societies where students can actively participate, refine their skills, gain exposure, and engage in experiences that contribute significantly to their confidence, personality, and overall development.

Careers360: How well did the curriculum prepare you for your career or higher studies?

Deeksha: The overall academic structure, the way teachers used to teach and guide us, and the study material they provided were all very helpful throughout the journey. The faculty members not only focused on classroom teaching but also guided us on where we could access additional study material, how we should prepare ourselves academically, and how we could plan and pursue our future careers. With their constant guidance, support, and the well-structured approach to learning, students were able to develop both academically and personally in a very positive way.

Careers360: Were there sufficient opportunities for internships, projects, or industry exposure during your time here?

Deeksha: Being part of only the second batch of the Law Department, we witnessed the department during its formative years as it was steadily growing and evolving. During the initial years, we largely explored and secured internships. As we progressed into our fourth and fifth years, the department had significantly strengthened its placement and internship support systems and was actively working towards expanding professional opportunities for students. We were regularly guided regarding organizations we could apply to, internship opportunities, and interviews that could help us gain professional exposure. It was encouraging to witness the department gradually expanding its industry connections and support structure alongside the growth of the students themselves.

Careers360: How did extracurricular activities, clubs, or cultural events contribute to your personal development?

Deeksha: In my first year itself, I participated in extracurricular activities and joined two societies — Dance and Drama. Although I could not continue for a very long time, it was still a very enjoyable experience.

Overall, I have seen and heard that the university actively organizes and participates in many competitions and events through different societies. It provides students with great exposure in whichever field they choose to pursue. These experiences really help students explore their interests, build confidence, and grow beyond academics.

Careers360: What were the key strengths of the campus environment (infrastructure, resources, student life)?

Deeksha: The infrastructure of the university is very well maintained, and the institution follows a strict zero-tolerance policy towards ragging, which contributes significantly to creating a safe, secure, and student-friendly environment on campus.

Apart from that, the campus itself is very pleasant, with plenty of greenery and beautifully maintained spaces. There are many scenic and photogenic spots across the university, which add to the overall ambience and make the campus experience even more enjoyable for students.

Careers360: Did the placement cell or career services meet your expectations? Why or why not?

Deeksha: Since we were part of the initial batches and the department itself was still in a phase of growth and development at that time, many systems, resources, and opportunities were also gradually evolving alongside it. However, I do believe that over time the institution has continued to strengthen and expand its resources, opportunities, and overall support systems significantly, which is encouraging to see.

Careers360: How has your degree contributed to your professional growth and career trajectory?

Deeksha: Overall, there were no major challenges as such during my academic journey. The experience was largely smooth, and I was able to manage academics and other activities quite comfortably throughout my time at the institution.

Careers360: What skills gained at the institution do you find most valuable in your current role?

Deeksha: Attending seminars, conferences, and various educational visits provided us with valuable practical exposure throughout our academic journey. We had opportunities to visit different legal and institutional spaces, including courts, correctional facilities, and other relevant establishments, which helped us understand the practical functioning of the legal system beyond classroom learning.

While I would not associate it with developing one specific skill, these experiences contributed immensely towards knowledge enhancement and professional awareness. They helped broaden our understanding of how vast and diverse the field of law truly is, while also giving us deeper insight into different aspects of the legal and judicial framework.

Careers360: What challenges did you face during your academic journey, and how did you overcome them?

Deeksha: Since I am a first-generation lawyer and there was no one from my family in the legal profession, the journey has definitely been challenging in many ways. During college, life was comparatively relaxed and enjoyable, but once I stepped into the professional world, there was a real reality check regarding how demanding and different the field actually is compared to what we imagine while entering law school.

The legal profession comes with many ups and downs, uncertainties, and continuous struggles, especially when you begin without professional contacts, family background, or someone to personally guide you through the process. Being a first-generation lawyer meant that I had to navigate opportunities, understand the profession, and build my path entirely on my own.

I believe the key factor throughout this journey has been consistency. Despite the challenges and difficulties, staying persistent, continuing to learn, and moving forward step by step has been extremely important, and it remains an ongoing journey even today.

Careers360: How do you stay connected with fellow alumni and the institution?

Deeksha: With the institution, I have received opportunities to participate in alumni lectures and various other engagements. Even today, whenever I feel the need for guidance or mentorship, I remain connected with my teachers and mentors and often reach out to them for support and advice.

As for my alumni connections, many of them are still my friends beyond just being former classmates. Of course, everyone is busy in their own professional and personal lives now, but the connection and bond still remain intact.

Careers360: Would you be interested in mentoring current students or participating in alumni activities?

Deeksha: Yes, I would absolutely love to contribute in that capacity. In fact, I am currently preparing for the UGC NET as well, so opportunities like mentoring and interacting with students would also help me further polish my skills, especially in communication, public speaking, and guiding students more effectively.

Careers360: As a professional, how would you advise a student to plan a career, keeping in mind changes and upheavals in the industry?

Deeksha: During one of my alumni lectures, where I was interacting primarily with first and second year students, I advised them to take internships very seriously and gain as much practical exposure as possible during law school.

I strongly believe that in the legal profession, especially litigation, practical exposure is just as important, if not more important- than theoretical knowledge. The concepts of law can always be studied and understood academically, but understanding the actual courtroom environment, court procedures, professional conduct, and the practical functioning of the legal system only comes through real exposure and experience.

I always tell students that if they aspire to become practicing advocates or litigating lawyers, they should actively pursue internships, regularly visit courts, and gain as much hands-on exposure as possible. Corporate law may follow a slightly different path, but for litigation, practical knowledge and courtroom familiarity are absolutely essential.

Careers360: Learning never ends for any professional. In this context, how do you think one should prepare for career advancement with value additions? How can students identify these areas?

Deeksha: From my personal experience, I would say that during the initial years, most students are still trying to understand where their real interests and strengths truly lie. If I talk about myself, when I initially took admission in law, I believed I would eventually pursue corporate law and work with large corporate firms or multinational companies with a high-paying corporate career path.

However, as I gradually became more familiar with different subjects and fields within law, my interests naturally started evolving. Over time, I found myself becoming far more inclined towards Criminal Law, Matrimonial Law, and ADR rather than the corporate side of law. As I explored the profession more deeply, I realized that corporate law did not resonate with me in the way I had initially imagined.

I believe this shift happens naturally with time and exposure. As students study different subjects, gain practical experience, and understand the profession better, they gradually discover the areas they genuinely connect with and where their true interests lie. Eventually, with experience and clarity, every individual begins to identify the direction they are most inclined towards professionally.

Careers360: How likely are you to recommend this institution to those planning to pursue higher studies?

Deeksha: I would definitely recommend the institution. In fact, after we passed out, I witnessed many significant and positive developments within the university, and it was genuinely impressive to see how much the institution evolved over time.

I have personally recommended Manav Rachna to my cousins as well. One of them is currently pursuing Dental studies and another is in the Physiotherapy Department, so even within my own family, the institution has remained a trusted choice for higher education.
