The Ministry of Education (MoE) has published the list of top government law colleges as per NIRF law rankings 2025 on September 4, 2025. Once again, the NLUs dominate the rankings, holding five out of the top ten spots. NLSIU Bengaluru is the top government law college in India as per the NIRF law rankings 2025. It is followed by NLU Delhi, NALSAR Hyderabad, and WBNUJS Kolkata in the second, third, and fourth positions, respectively. The top government law colleges, as per NIRF law college rankings 2025 remain unchanged as last year. In all, there are a total of 25 government law colleges in the NIRF law rankings 2025.
Continuing the trend seen in previous NIRF law rankings, top government law colleges, primarily leading NLUs and central universities, have dominated the rankings. The 2025 NIRF law rankings are based on parameters including teaching, learning, and resources; research and professional practices; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception.
The NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) evaluates institutions on five broad parameters, each with its own weightage. Given below are the weightage assigned to each of the parameters considered for arriving at the top law colleges in India.

The National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, leads the top spot in the ‘Best-Performing Law Colleges’ category for the 8th consecutive year.
The NIRF 2025 law rankings for the top 5 government colleges remain the same except for a swap between GNLU Gandhinagar and Jamia Millia Islamia. GNLU Gandhinagar improves to the 5th-best government law college, while Jamia Millia Islamia settles for 7th position.
Out of 25 government law colleges in the NIRF 2025 rankings, 13 are National Law Universities.

While NLUs are costly, you can still pursue government-funded law education through state-funded universities and their affiliated colleges that accept CLAT scores, such as institutes like Banaras Hindu University and Aligarh Muslim University.

It is always better to take the CLAT exam right after Class 12 if your goal is to build a career in law, because CLAT UG is specifically designed for admission into integrated five-year law programs like BA LLB, BCom LLB, or BBA LLB. Appearing after Class 12 saves you time, as you complete both graduation and law together in a single course. On the other hand, if you first complete graduation and then plan for law, you will not be eligible for CLAT UG but instead for CLAT PG, which is meant for admission into LLM programs. This path takes longer, because you first spend three or four years on graduation and then add another three years in an LLB program if you choose not to go for an integrated course. So, if you are already sure about pursuing law as your career, writing CLAT right after Class 12 is the smarter and time-saving option, while writing it after graduation makes sense only if you are considering higher studies in law or a shift in career later.

Both the colleges Maharaja Agrasen (MAIMS) or Gitarattan (GIBS) are affiliated to IP University and allows admission either by CLAT or IPU CET Law. Without either of these exams, your admission is NOT accepted there. You can try looking for management quota seats in these colleges if you have got good marks in 12th class.
