CLAT 2027 is just around the corner. Universities such as NLSIU, NALSAR, WBNUJS, and NLU Jodhpur are among the most preferred National Law Universities (NLUs). The success rate in all top-tier NLUs is less than 1%. Given the competition, students preparing for CLAT 2027 must assess their mock scores against the admission cutoffs in these universities. While the mock tests do not predict the exam results, they guide the preparation, allowing students to compare their scores with CLAT previous years' admission cutoffs.
For top-tier NLUs, general category students are required to secure a rank within AIR 500. NLSIU, the most preferred among the list, has consistently closed general category admissions between AIR 100-120 in recent years. NALSAR is the second most preferred university.
In CLAT 2026, WBNUJS Kolkata, NLU Jodhpur, GNLU Gandhinagar and NLIU Bhopal closed general category admissions between AIR 343 and 459. This roughly translates to 95-100 marks. Reserved-category candidates (OBC, EWS, SC, ST) can get into these NLUs at lower scores.
OBC and EWS candidates can target NLSIU and NALSAR with around 90-95 marks, and SC candidates at around 80-85. Since mock scores are not the same as the real paper's marks, candidates should refer to the mock scores to assess their own preparedness. A low score in the range of 60-70 does not rule out securing a higher score in the actual exam.
CLAT scores between 95 and 100 marks can help students secure a rank close to 370, while the 80-85 marks fall close to 1650 rank. Even a few marks can shift students’ rank by hundreds.
A candidate scoring around 70-80 marks in a genuinely difficult mock can be making good progress towards a competitive CLAT score. In an easy to moderate mock, the target should be higher.
WBNUJS, NLUJ, GNLU, NLIU and MNLU Mumbai have closing ranks within a relatively narrow range. NLSIU and NALSAR require a higher target of 105+ marks in the actual exam, which means the target mock scores should be close to 100. Last year, NLSIU closed at AIR 108, compared with AIR 168 for NALSAR, but both fall in the same marks range.
A score of 65-75 in a difficult mock can be a benchmark for several tier 2 NLUs. In normal mock, a score of 90 to 95+ keeps most tier 2 NLUs open, and 85-90+ marks can help candidates target a wider range of tier 2 and tier 3 options for general. Therefore, unreserved category students scoring around 90 in mocks might not get a tier 1 NLU, but can plan on tier 2 and tier 3 NLUs.
EWS and OBC candidates need a mock score of around 95 for the top two NLUs (NLSIU and NALSAR), far lower than a general category candidate. NALSAR closed before NLSIU for both categories in CLAT 2026. For SC candidates, the equivalent marks range is 80-85, while ST candidates fall in the 75-80 range.
For the other tier 1 NLUs, SC closing ranks at WBNUJS (3,833) and NLU Jodhpur (4,281) also fall in the 80-85 marks band. ST closing ranks at WBNUJS (8,937), GNLU Gandhinagar (8,797) and NLIU Bhopal (10,159) fall in the 65-75 marks range.
Track average score: Calculate the score as per the average score the candidate is getting over the last 5-6 full-length mocks.
Focus on rank: A candidate at 100 marks in the real paper has a rank near 180, while one at 95 is near 552. Both are in the 95-100 range, but only one is close to NALSAR's cutoff.
Set category-wise targets: A general category candidate with 85 marks has options such as IIULER Goa and some tier 3 NLUs, while an SC candidate with the same score can have a chance at NLSIU.
Account for mock difficulty level: 70 marks in a difficult CLAT mock indicate stronger preparation than the same score in an easier paper.
