Edited By Team Careers360 | Updated on Sep 18, 2023 02:18 PM IST | #AILET PG

The All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) for LLM is a competitive examination that serves as a gateway to some of India's most prestigious law schools, including the National Law University, Delhi (NLU Delhi). As you embark on the journey to prepare for the AILET PG, it's crucial to have a well-structured plan that covers all aspects of the exam. This comprehensive guide will provide you with valuable insights and strategies to effectively prepare for the AILET LLM and increase your chances of success.

The AILET PG exam is structured into two main sections, namely Section A and Section B.

Section A- English and Legal Reasoning multiple-choice questions (MCQs) make up Section A.

Part 1: English Language

Part 2: Legal Reasoning

A total of 50 multiple-choice questions with a cumulative weight of 75 marks will be included in Section A.

Section B- Section B, on the other hand, is made up of descriptive questions about several legal specialities. There will be eight to ten descriptive questions covering a range of legal topics. However, you are only required to respond to two of this section's descriptive questions. A total of 75 points from the evaluation of Section B are applied to the exam.

For Section B, your answers should collectively amount to 25 marks per question.

The breakdown of topics you need to focus on while preparing for the AILET PG exam:

Section A: English and Legal Reasoning

  • English: Synonyms, Antonyms, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Subject-Verb Agreement, Tenses, Spotting Errors, Choosing the Appropriate Words, Parts of Speech, Idioms and Phrases, Figures of Speech, Parts of Speech, Punctuation, Sentence Rearrangement.

  • Legal Reasoning: Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence/Legal Theory, Contract Law and Specific Relief Act, Family Law, Criminal Law, Environment Law, Tort and Consumer Protection Act, Public International Law, Administrative Law, IT Act and Tax Law, Copyright Act and Evidence Act, Indian Constitution and Penal Code, Indian Contract Act, Company Law, Property Law, Intellectual Property Law and IPR Law.

Tips for Legal Reasoning: Practice interpreting principles and applying them quickly. Focus on questions related to facts and principles, including topics like murder, counterfeiting currency, negligence, assault, constitution, agency, offer acceptance, and necessity.

Section B: Descriptive Questions

  • To be eligible for Section B evaluation, make sure you pass Section A.

  • There are 8–10 questions in this area, and you must respond to 2.

  • Questions based on Legal Reasoning or recent case laws and analytical inquiries to gauge your conceptual understanding may be included in the questions.

  • Pay attention to recent case law because it matters. Learn and reread current case law in its entirety.

  • According to an analysis from the previous year, criminal law (CrPc and IPC) is given the most weight. Pay attention to the criminal law questions.

  • Legal precedent and constitutional law are also given considerable weight. Be knowledgeable about their concepts, particularly for the LLM exam's analytical questions.

  • In your preparation, make sure to thoroughly cover the specified topics, practise legal reasoning scenarios, and stay updated with recent case laws, especially in the areas of Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, and Jurisprudence.

Lay a strong foundation by focusing on Polity and related questions. While some of you might question its relevance to the PG entrance exam, let me clarify why it matters: passages in the exam might contain questions, direct or indirect, about laws, amendments, or presidential powers. In these instances, having a solid foundation becomes crucial. Enhance your grasp by practising with previous year's question papers.

Concentrate your preparation on the following topics:

  • Privacy

  • Sedition

  • TRIPS

  • Consideration

  • Defamation

  • UN and its functioning

  • Biodiversity Act 2002

  • Mediation Bill, 2021

For tackling subjective-type questions, remember not to prioritise this section over the objective one. If you don't clear the first section, the rest won't be evaluated. The subjective segment holds 50 marks, and keeping up with daily newspaper reading will boost your readiness. When crafting your answers, ensure you incorporate precedents, principles, and provisions to enhance their weightage. Quality triumphs over quantity in your answers, so focus on delivering well-crafted responses.
