The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) was ranked fourth-best law institution in the country in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) last year. This year, the NIRF Law school ranking report has not yet been published, but the data submitted by the university is available. The report highlights placement trends, faculty overview, the university’s expansion over the past three years, expenditure, and several other details.
WBNUJS is one of the most prestigious law universities in the country, offering admission through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). It offers 5-year integrated LLB courses — BA LLB and BSc LLB at the undergraduate level and LLM at the postgraduate level.
NUJS has steadily increased the 5-year LLB intake from 127 in 2019-20 to 196 in 2023-24. The increase in intake is mainly due to the addition of BSc LLB, which the university launched in 2023-24. Among top NLUs, only NLSIU Bangalore has expanded faster than NUJS. NLSIU, under its five-year expansion plan (2021-2025), increased the BA LLB intake from 180 in 2022 to 310 in 2025. In comparison, NLU Delhi has seen the least expansion from 83 in 2019 to 123 in 2023-24.
The one-year LLM programme at NUJS Kolkata has an intake of 100 students.
Overall, the university has 714 students in the 5-year LLB. Of these, 385 students are male, and the remaining 329 are female. The PG programme has 67 males and 37 females.
NUJS has achieved 100% BA LLB placements in both 2018-19 and 2019-20 graduating batches. The median salary of Rs. 20 LPA offered to graduates of NUJS Kolkata in 2023-24 was the highest among all NLUs. The 2024-25 graduating batch has also secured a similar median salary.

NUJS has 66 faculty members as per the data submitted for the NIRF 2025 ranking. The faculty includes professors, assistant professors, associate professors, and lecturers. Of these, 32 are regular, and the remaining 34 are non-permanent. The faculty-student ratio is approximately 1:12, which is far better than the 1:40 mandated under the Bar Council of India’s Rules of Legal Education 2020.
In 2023-24, the university had 30 sponsored research projects funded by 23 agencies. The university received Rs. 4.47 cr in sponsored research funding in 2023-24. It is almost 4x higher than the 2019-20 research grant of 1.34 cr.
The data provided by the university in NIRF 2025 shows a tightening of overall spending. The salary expenses fell by almost 24%, from 22.71cr in 2021 to 17.23 cr in 2023. Expenditure on maintenance of academic facilities and infrastructure also dropped by around 45%, reflecting possible cost-cutting. NUJS Kolkata, being a member of the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLU) will accept CLAT 2026 scores for both 5-year LLB and LLM courses. The entrance test is scheduled to be held on December 07, across the country.
Since the inception of NIRF Law ranking in 2018, WBNUJS has consistently secured a place among the top 10 NLUs. The increased spending on seminars, conferences and workshops, along with a 4x higher research funding, shows NUJS has focused its efforts towards providing a more practical approach to legal education and research. While the CLAT cutoffs show that BA LLB at NUJS is more preferred, the BSc LLB is gaining popularity among students with a science background in their senior secondary.
