Yajvin Mahajan secured AIR 44 and Punjab Rank 1 in CLAT 2026 with a score of 106.5 out of 119. He is now pursuing BA LLB (Hons.) at NLSIU Bengaluru. In his CLAT preparation, Yajvin focused on using limited resources effectively rather than following multiple study materials, with revision playing an important role in his CLAT Current Affairs and GK preparation.
In an interview with Careers360, Yajvin talks about his CLAT mock test strategy, how he improved accuracy and attempts, how he prepared for Quantitative Techniques, and what he learnt from his transition to NLSIU. He also shares advice for CLAT 2027 students aiming for a top NLUs.
Careers360: You secured AIR 44 and Punjab Rank 1. What do you think you did differently from most CLAT aspirants during your preparation?
Yajvin: The FOMO factor did not creep in. Many of us run after multiple resources, but using limited resources efficiently is much more beneficial than using multiple resources superficially, especially for GK. I used fewer resources and focused on revising them, rather than using multiple resources without any concrete plan.
Careers360: How many questions did you attempt in CLAT? What is the ideal attempt to achieve such a score?
Yajvin: During my actual CLAT exam, I attempted all the questions. Try attempting 100-110 questions; provided your accuracy is good enough, you will be able to reach a safe score. If your attempts are low, make sure you are practising enough CLAT sectional tests. Aim for better time and accuracy.
Careers360: Among the five sections in the CLAT exam, which section took you the longest to master, and what finally helped you improve in it?
Yajvin: GK took the longest to improve. Revision was the factor that helped me. I made sure that whatever I was reading settled well in my memory. Too much information was not worth covering if you forget even the basic facts of that topic.
Careers360: What did your mock scores look like in the final two months? Was there a point when you knew achieving a top-50 rank was realistic?
Yajvin: They ranged in the 90s, sometimes crossing 100 as well. I was told by my mentors not to take the CLAT mock scores to heart. So I barely did that. But I still hoped that I might get into the top three NLUs. That seemed realistic.
Careers360: What was your approach to Quantitative Techniques? Did you treat it as a section to maximise or simply avoid losing marks?
Yajvin: I was in good terms with Quants. I used to understand the concepts in class and then practise the questions from the coaching modules. R.S. Aggarwal was also helpful in my improvement. It was a score-maximised section for me. I used to attempt both the passages in the Quantitative Techniques section and try to get 100 per cent accuracy out of that.
Careers360: Now at NLSIU, what has been most different from what you imagined while preparing for CLAT?
Yajvin: When we had topper interactions, we were told to read a lot, as that will also be helpful in law school, along with CLAT. The only difference was that, instead of being a listener to people telling tales about the academic rigour, I became a witness to that.
Careers360: If you could give one piece of advice to a CLAT 2027 aspirant scoring in the 70 to 80 range and aiming for NLSIU, what would it be?
Yajvin: I would say self-analysis is important. Just know where you are making mistakes. That can be related to your academics or personal life. So keep on working to improve. Also, do not stop putting in the effort, even if you do not see the results. Be consistent with them.
