In CLAT, around 70,000 to 80,000 candidates compete for roughly 3,700 seats across the 26 NLUs and IIULER Goa. The overall success rate is about 5%. Getting into a preferred NLU is harder, particularly for general category candidates targeting universities such as NLSIU, NALSAR and WBNUJS Kolkata.
CLAT 2027 is just over a month away. A score of 60 in a difficult mock can give 85-90 marks in the actual exam. But if the test was easy or average, that same score could translate into much lower expected marks, leading to lower ranks. The targeted NLU options also vary by category, as their closing ranks change for general, OBC, EWS, SC and ST candidates.
Mock difficulty | Equivalent CLAT marks | Approx AIR (based on CLAT 2026) |
Hard mock | 85-90 | 1,285-2,413 |
Easy or moderate mock | 60-65 | 13,849-18,578 |
Last year, CLAT marks in the range of 85-90 cover approximately 1,100 ranks, while the 60-65 range spans nearly 4,700 ranks.
Candidates should check their mock's all-India rank. These ranks in mocks cannot predict the actual CLAT result but give a good comparison.
A score of 60 in a difficult mock can indicate a CLAT score of 85-90, corresponding to an expected AIR of 1,285-2,413. At this rank, tier 1 and several tier 2 NLUs are out of reach for general category candidates. Candidates in this rank range can instead consider NLUs whose general category closing ranks fall between AIR 1,400 and 2,646.

NLU Tripura | BA LLB (Hons.) | 1,540 | 2,410 |
IIULER Goa | BA LLB (Hons.) | 943 | 2,646 |
Based on CLAT 2026 cutoffs, DSNLU Visakhapatnam, MNLU Nagpur, NUSRL Ranchi, GNLU Silvassa and TNNLU Tiruchirappalli closed between AIR 1,400 and 1,528. Candidates with ranks further down can make these NLUs their relevant options: MNLU Aurangabad, DBRANLU Sonepat, MPDNLU Jabalpur, NLUJA Assam, HPNLU Shimla and RPNLU Prayagraj. NLU Tripura closed at AIR 2,410, while IIULER Goa closed at AIR 2,646.
A score of 60-65 in an easy or moderate mock corresponds to an expected AIR of around 13,849-18,578. At this rank, no regular general category NLU seat was available in CLAT 2026. The last such seat closed at AIR 2,802 for the BBA LLB programme at IIULER Goa.
Some state-specific or special-quota options can be available, depending on eligibility. For example, HPNLU Shimla's GC-HP quota closed at AIR 11,968, while GNLU Silvassa's GC-DDN quota closed at AIR 19,053. These seats are subject to domicile rules and are not open to every candidate.
Category | Hard mock (expected AIR 1,285-2,413) | Easy/moderate mock (expected AIR 13,849-18,578) |
OBC | NLU Jodhpur (AIR 1,427 and 1,657), GNLU Gandhinagar (1,952), NLIU Bhopal (1,966), HNLU Raipur (2,152) and lower-tier NLUs | No regular OBC seat. The last closed at AIR 5,170. |

ST | All NLUs | RGNUL Punjab (AIR 14,067), DSNLU Visakhapatnam (15,199), GNLU Silvassa (15,676), NLU Odisha (17,359), NUSRL Ranchi (17,445) and lower-tier NLUs |
OBC candidates scoring 60 in a difficult mock can target NLUs such as NLU Jodhpur, GNLU Gandhinagar, NLIU Bhopal and HNLU Raipur. EWS candidates can consider NLIU Bhopal and GNLU Silvassa. However, at the easy or moderate mock equivalent of AIR 13,849-18,578, regular OBC and EWS seats are unlikely, as their last closing ranks in CLAT 2026 were AIR 5,170 and 3,873, respectively.
SC candidates have options in both scenarios. At the hard-mock equivalent of AIR 1,285-2,413, they can target several NLUs, including NLSIU and NALSAR, which closed at AIR 3,072 and 3,259, respectively. At the easy or moderate mock equivalent, options include HPNLU Shimla BBA LLB (AIR 13,896) and IIULER Goa BA LLB (AIR 15,315) and BBA LLB (AIR 15,641).
ST candidates can target all NLUs at the hard-mock equivalent. At the easy or moderate mock equivalent, options include RGNUL Punjab, DSNLU Visakhapatnam, GNLU Silvassa, NLU Odisha and NUSRL Ranchi, with closing ranks between AIR 14,067 and 17,445. Further options include DBRANLU Sonepat (AIR 20,400), NLUJA Assam (AIR 21,460), HPNLU Shimla (AIR 22,118), MPDNLU Jabalpur (AIR 22,701) and IIULER Goa (AIR 25,555), based on CLAT 2026 cutoffs.
