CULET stands for Calcutta University Law Entrance Test. It is a state level entrance exam conducted every year for law admissions in Calcutta University and all affiliated law colleges. The CULET 2025 exam notification has long been delayed due to the course renewal issue with BCI. There is rising uncertainty among the CULET 2025 exam process as affiliation-related issues are yet to be resolved. The entire CULET 2025 admission process has been delayed over renewal for law courses by the Bar Council of India. According to BCI, the course renewal was pending due to the non-payment of the required amount of Rs 35 lakhs by the law department of Calcutta University. The particular matter came in highlight after a rape incident was reported in one of the affiliated law colleges under Calcutta University. The required amount has reportedly been paid and the course renewal is awaited. It is expected that the CULET 2025 admission process will begin immediately upon renewal of the courses approved by BCI.
In the past few years there have been rising questions on how the CULET 2025 exam has been conducted. There have been complaints about how students with low merit ranks in CULET have also managed to get admissions in government-aided colleges under Calcutta University. An inspection of 14 law colleges under CU was conducted and several anomalies were identified. The report had highlighted significant safety and fairness issues within the admissions process. Amid all this the university is considering a major overhaul in the exam format to ensure better transparency.

Amid rising concerns over transparency, Calcutta University is reportedly considering major changes on how the exam will be conducted. One of the major changes CU is planning is to bring in an external agency to conduct the exam. This way the exam process can be standardized and chances of manipulations can be limited. Until last year, the CULET exam was conducted internally and there were complaints of candidates with low merit ranks getting admissions in top government-aided law colleges.
