CULET 2025 to be held online by an external agency

A meeting including 12 principals of Calcutta University-affiliated law colleges, CU interim VC Santa Datta De and others was held to decide the future of the CULET exam. In the meeting, it was decided that from 2025, the CULET exam will be computerised. Furthermore, to ensure transparency and fairness, an external agency will conduct the CULET 2025 exam. Earlier, the CULET exam was conducted by the Law Department of Calcutta University. The department itself set question papers and published merit lists.

As quoted by TOI, “CU interim VC Santa Datta De said, "All the law college principals were invited to decide democratically on the admission test pattern. The test will be computerised, and the law department will not be involved in the process." The dean of law, Sandip Mandal, also said, "We are trying our best to start admissions at the earliest."

Questions on CULET transparency

Abnormalities in the admission modalities and irregularities in the exam were identified upon an inspection of 14 law colleges under Calcutta University last year. The issue only came into light after a rape incident in one of the participating law colleges of CULET. Since then, there have been demands to change the exam pattern of CULET. The university has been thinking of making major changes in the CULET exam for some time now.

CULET 2025 notification in the next seven days

Students seeking law admissions in Calcutta University have been eagerly waiting for the CULET 2025 notification ever since the announcement of their board’s results. In the same meeting, it was decided that the CULET 2025 notification will be published in the next seven days. The CULET 2025 applications are likely to start in the third week of September 2025. It is expected that Calcutta University will look to wrap up the admission process as soon as it can, as all the admission modalities have already been delayed by more than two months. Earlier, the CULET 2025 exam was delayed due to the BCI approval delay in renewal for law courses by the Bar Council of India. The BCI approval was pending due to non-payment of an amount of Rs 35 Lakhs by the Law Department of CU.
