Time and Work is one of the significant arithmetic topics for the CLAT 2027 Quantitative Techniques segment. Questions on this topic examine the capability of the CLAT 2027 candidate to analyse the association among the quantity of work done, the time spent, and the efficiency of the persons or workers engaged in the activity.

These questions can be direct numerical questions or word problems based on workers, machines, teams and efficiency. Understanding of the basic concepts can assist CLAT 2027 preparation in solving these questions without doing any cumbersome calculations.
The CLAT 2027 exam pattern will have 120 multiple-choice questions with 120 marks to be answered within two hours. There will be about 10-14 questions in the Quantitative Techniques segment, which is 10% of the total number of questions. There will be negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer

CLAT 2027 Time and Work Practice Questions PDF |
The problems of Time & Work are concerned with the inter-dependence of work, time and efficiency.
In case a person does a certain work in 10 days, the amount of work done by the person in one day will be:
1/10 of the work
This is known as one-day work of the person.
Thus, for instance, in case A takes 12 days to finish some work:
One day’s work of A = 1/12
Hence, in 3 days, A does:
3 × 1/12 = 1/4 of the work
This is the basic principle of the Time & Work problem.
The CLAT 2027 candidates must keep in mind the following formulas:
Work = Efficiency × Time
Work in one day = 1/No. of days needed
If A finishes the work in x days, the work done by A in one day = 1/x
Work done by A and B per day = Work done by A per day + Work done by B per day
Time = Total work/Daily work
If efficiency is increased, then the time taken will decrease.
One day's work of A = 1/10
One day's work of B = 1/15
Total work done by both in one day:
1/10 + 1/15 = 5/30 = 1/6
So, they will take 6 days to finish the work.
Given below are the Types of Time and Work Questions Asked in CLAT 2027.
This set of questions determines how long it takes an individual to do a certain task.
For instance, if A does a work in 8 days, then A will do 1/8 of that work in a day.
This becomes helpful when the problem asks for the work done by A in a certain period of days.
Here, the questions entail two or more people working on the same task.
For instance, if A does a task in 12 days and B does it in 18 days,
then their combined work in a day is:
1/12 + 1/18 = 5/36
It means that the time taken is:
36/5 = 7.2 days
Efficiency means the amount of work done in a particular time period by an individual.
If the efficiency of A is twice that of B, then A will take half the time taken by B to do the same work.
So, for instance, if B takes 20 days, then A will take:
20 ÷ 2 = 10 days
Thus, efficiency and time are inversely proportional to each other when total work is constant.
Other questions may require candidates to compute the amount of work done in a given period of time.
For instance, if A does a job in 20 days, then in 5 days:
Work done = 5/20 = 1/4
Thus, the work left will be:
1 - 1/4 = 3/4
Problems involving Time and Work can be based on comparing the efficiencies of various workers or machinery.
Suppose that one machine takes 6 hours to do a job while another machine does the same job in 12 hours; their combined efficiency can be computed using the addition of their respective efficiencies.
It is imperative for CLAT 2027 students to determine whether the problem involves comparison of workers, efficiency, or time.
CLAT 2027 is a time-bounded exam; thus, candidates must ensure that they don’t indulge in long-drawn calculations. Begin by converting the information provided into one-day work or work rate.
For instance, if A can do the work in 15 days while B can do it in 10 days, write the following:
A = 1/15
B = 1/10
The two can then add up the fractions to obtain their work rate. An important technique is the LCM technique. For instance, if A does the work in 12 days while B does it in 18 days, take the total amount of work as the LCM of 12 and 18, which is 36 units.
Efficiency of A = 36/12 = 3 units/day
Efficiency of B = 36/18 = 2 units/day
Thus, they can complete 5 units of work per day, and hence need:
36/5 = 7.2 days
The CLAT 2027 candidates need to be cautious of the following mistakes:
Taking the number of days for one day's work.
Taking the number of days for work rates.
Not taking into account the fact that time and efficiency are inversely proportional.
Taking the wrong LCM while using the unitary work method.
Neglecting the work done by one person beforehand.
Neglecting the case of a person leaving or joining the job.
Errors in calculating fractions.
Spending too much time on a difficult problem.
First, find out what the problem demands and then calculate.
The candidates must know how work, efficiency, and time are related. Practice simple questions for one individual before proceeding to questions for two or more individuals.
Having understood the basic concepts, practice questions based on efficiency, joining and leaving of workers, and combined work. CLAT 2027 Candidates should also try to solve mixed CLAT 2027 Quantitative Techniques practice questions.
Preparing a formula sheet might prove helpful while revising. But the candidates should give importance to understanding the logic behind the formulas rather than mechanically learning them.
After attempting a CLAT 2027 mock test or practice test, analyse all the wrong answers. If an error has been made because of fractions, unitary work, and efficiency, then practice those particular concepts.
As the wrong answer is penalised by 0.25 marks in CLAT 2027, accuracy is equally important along with speed.
