Among top 100 Universities Globally in the Times Higher Education (THE) Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026
Every year, thousands of MH CET Law aspirants in Maharashtra chase the same dream - a seat at either Government Law College, Mumbai or Indian Law Society Law College, Pune. When it comes to the best law colleges in Maharashtra, GLC Mumbai and ILS Pune are the obvious top two. But here is the question most aspirants never stop to ask - are these two colleges actually comparable? GLC Mumbai is Asia's oldest law college, sitting steps away from the Bombay High Court in Churchgate. ILS Pune is a sprawling 154-acre campus in the heart of Pune city’s academic belt.
Every year, these two colleges face intense competition, with the highest cutoffs. Last year, the MH CET 3-year LLB cutoff for both these colleges opened up at 100 percentile for Maharashtra MS Male candidates. GLC Mumbai’s 3-year LLB admissions closed at 99.663 percentile, while ILS Pune's 3-year LLB admissions closed at 99.071. Similar competition was seen in 5-year LLB, where admissions closed at the 98.873 percentile for BLS LLB at GLC Mumbai and the 97.476 percentile at ILS Pune for BA LLB in the MS Male category. This article breaks down GLC Mumbai and ILS Pune across admissions, fees, infrastructure, placements, and location — so you can make the right call, not just the obvious one.

Both GLC Mumbai and ILS Pune are located in the premier cities of Maharashtra. While Mumbai is home to the Bombay High Court, Pune has the District and Sessions Court. When it comes to litigation, the best choice for students will be GLC Mumbai. The college is located in Churchgate and is in proximity to the Bombay High Court, the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, and Nariman Point. Students studying in ILS Pune only have the Pune District and Sessions Court, where litigation and court exposure is limited and way less than that of GLC Mumbai. Coming to corporate exposure, both GLC Mumbai and ILS Pune have good connectivity to big corporate houses and legal firms.
The cutoff data makes one thing very clear - GLC Mumbai's 5-year BLS LLB is consistently more competitive than both ILS Pune courses across each category. For MS OPEN category candidates, GLC Mumbai closed 1.4 percentile points higher than ILS Pune's BA LLB and BBA LLB. The percentile difference may seem small, but it translates to a significant rank difference at this level. The gap further widens for reserved categories, where SC candidates need 88.269 for GLC Mumbai against 80.906 for ILS Pune's BA LLB. This is a difference of over 7 percentile points. Interestingly, for the ST category, ILS Pune's BBA LLB closed lower than even ILS Pune's BA LLB, making it the relatively more accessible option among the three. right.

ILS Pune is the easy winner when infrastructure is a comparison parameter. ILS Pune has a 154-acre campus, relatively bigger than GLC Mumbai’s campus. ILS Pune also has a hostel facility, whereas GLC Mumbai does not have one. The ILS Pune library is also bigger than GLC Mumbai. Also, GLC Mumbai lacks sports facilities as the campus is not very vast; on the other hand, ILS Pune has good sporting facilities like Indoor (carom, table tennis, chess), outdoor (cricket, football, volleyball, basketball), a gym, a swimming pool, and 4 tennis courts. For students, there is a dedicated Placement Cell Office at ILS Pune to better guide students during the placement season. In terms of infrastructure, ILS Pune clearly leads GLC Mumbai. Essentially, GLC Mumbai and ILS Pune are not really competing for the same student, even though the cutoffs of both the colleges are nearly similar. GLC Mumbai is the best choice for the student who wants to be a lawyer in the truest sense, walking into the Bombay High Court as a first-year. GLC Mumbai carries a 170-year legacy with fees no private college can match. The name of GLC Mumbai alone commands respect at every law firm and court in the country.
On the other hand, ILS Pune is a good choice for the student who wants the complete college experience, a green campus, hostel life, organised placements, and a vast library. A premium product at a fairly premium price compared to GLC Mumbai.
Both these colleges open at 100 percentile. If you are lucky enough to choose, ask yourself one question: courtroom or campus?
