The 5-year LLB admissions 2026 are in full flow, and students have a very important choice to make between different colleges. Undoubtedly, tier-1 National Law Universities like NLSIU Bengaluru, NALSAR Hyderabad, WBNUJS Kolkata, etc., are the top choice for students when it comes to choosing institutions. However, given the high competition in these law schools, only a few students manage to crack their admissions. For candidates who are unable to secure admission in Tier 1 NLUs, there lies a very big dilemma - Tier 2 NLUs or top Non-NLUs. In this article, we compare tier 2 NLUs and top non-NLUs so students can make a sound decision based on their preferences.
The National Law Universities are the top law schools in India, similar to IITs for engineering and IIMs for MBA. The National Law Universities are informally divided into three tiers - tier 1, 2 and 3, based on their reputation. While the tier 1 NLUs are definitely unmatched, many tier 2 NLUs can be compared to top Non-NLUs like SLS Pune, Jindal Global Law School, Nirma University, NMIMS, etc. Below are all the Tier 2 NLUs and other options to consider from non-NLUs.
Tier 2 | Non-NLUs |

Judging a college by the career outcomes is a very good way of deciding what value the college holds for your time, money and efforts. While the placement records of Tier 1 NLUs cannot be questioned at all, the placements of Tier 2 NLUs can definitely be compared to top non-NLUs like SLS Pune, NMIMS, Nirma University, DU 5-year LLB, SLS Noida, GLC Mumbai etc. Here is a brief comparison of placements between some of the Tier-2 NLUs and top non-NLUs.
Tier 2 | Average Salary (Yearly in Rs) | Non-NLUs | Average Salary (Yearly) |

The value of brand and reputation is a very crucial factor when it comes to securing career prospects, even in the context of internships and placements. Tier 2 NLUs such as NLU Odisha, HNLU Raipur or MNLU Mumbai boast of the famous “NLU brand.” This brand is valued highly within the sphere of litigation, corporate, and even in public sector jobs.
But there are several reputable private law institutions, too. NMIMS, for instance, is known for its business-focused courses and regular placement services. Another school that offers excellent placement is Nirma University because of its well-defined placement procedures. Christ University is distinguished by its rigorous education program and all-round approach to student development.
Internships are one of the most important parts of law education and determine the career path for the student to some extent. With respect to internships and other industrial training experiences, the private law colleges prove to have an upper hand over the NLU for some basic reasons.
Firstly, NMIMS (Mumbai), Christ (Bangalore), and Nirma (Ahmedabad) are located in major cities. The presence of law firms, startups, and corporate houses makes it much easier for the students to get internships. Secondly, the colleges are equipped with good placement cells which arrange for internship training sessions for the students with the help of tie-ups and industry connections.
For instance, at top private law schools, the internship program of the universities involves regular interaction with industries, participation in guest lectures, and involvement in activities to promote corporate exposure of the students. Likewise, there are mandatory internship programs and career-oriented initiatives.
On the other hand, Students cannot totally undermine NLUs for the internships and industry exposure, as they also offer good opportunities to students. However, private colleges and other Non-NLUs fare slightly better in terms of internships and industry exposure.
The cost of education is one of the prime factors that should be considered when selecting a law school. The average fee structure of a private college ranges from Rs 15 lakhs to Rs 25 lakhs, considering that the duration of the integrated LLB course is five years. On the other hand, the Tier 2 NLUs are comparatively cheaper with fee structures ranging from Rs 12 lakhs to Rs 20 lakhs.
As far as ROI is concerned, NLUs are likely to provide greater value due to the lower cost structure associated with them. However, this cannot be the only criterion used to calculate ROI. The reason behind high fees charged by private institutes is their improved infrastructure and industrial exposure, as well as proper placement assistance. For those who seek a corporate career, private law colleges are advantageous. Hence, while Tier 2 NLUs may be considered economical, the ROI in private colleges can be significant in terms of career benefits. Below are the fee structures of all the NLUs and Non-NLUs being discussed above.
Tier 2 | Fees (Yearly in Rs) | Non-NLUs | Fees (Yearly in Rs) |
HNLU, Raipur | 2,25,000 | SLS Pune | 5,26,000 |
RMLNLU, Lucknow | 2,05,000 | Jindal Global Law School | 11,06,000 |
RGNUL, Punjab | 1,95,000 | Nirma University | 4,25,700 |
CNLU, Patna | 2,72,253 | GLC Mumbai | 12,750 |
NUALS, Kochi | 2,65,670 | Army Institute of Law | 3,76,954 |
NLUO, Odisha | 2,71,520 | Christ University | 2,41,000 |
NUSRL, Ranchi | 3,39,000 | NMIMS Mumbai Campus | 3,75,000 |
MNLU, Mumbai | 2,62,482 | Delhi University 5-year LLB | 2,08,550 |
DSNLU, Visakhapatnam | 2,30,000 | BITS Law School | 9,77,100 |
TNNLU, Tiruchirappalli | 2,99,430 | SLS Noida | 4,41,000 |
There have been significant changes in the gap between good private law schools and Tier 2 NLUs. Every institution has its strong points, and which institution will suit the student largely depends on their personal preferences. Private law schools like NMIMS, Christ, and Nirma have their strong points in facilities, location, industrial experience, and placements. These institutions are suitable for those seeking corporate careers as lawyers.
On the other hand, Tier 2 NLUs still have an upper hand with regard to the value of their NLU tag, industry-relevant academic structure, economical fee structure compared to non-NLUs, and career paths such as litigation or being part of the judiciary. This means that the value brought by the "NLU tag" should not be undermined in traditional legal careers. In conclusion, it all comes down to individual needs. Students need to consider various aspects like budget, future goals, program outcomes, internships and more. There is currently no doubt that both types of institutions provide really good opportunities for pursuing legal careers.
