Calculation-based problems can become very tough in Quantitative Techniques in CLAT 2027 when they require a lot of calculations. But aspirants do not require having advance math knowledge to excel in them. What is required is an understanding of basic principles and using CLAT 2026 quantitative techniques shortcut formulas whenever applicable.
CLAT Quant Section is basically about numbers, their interpretation and concepts of basic mathematics. Quick calculation methods will surely prove helpful in saving a lot of time in solving questions in the CLAT 2027 preparation. Aspirants must try to find an easy way out rather than calculating everything in order to reach the solution to the problem.
Here are some effective CLAT Quant tricks and shortcuts for aspirants.
Time management in CLAT 2027 is one of the biggest problems in CLAT 2027. Spending a few minutes solving CLAT 2027 maths questions may hinder your ability to solve questions from other sections.
Shortcuts will be useful to you in:
Solving percentage calculations faster
Solving ratio questions in a shorter time
Comparing numbers easily
Reducing the time spent in calculating
Omitting unnecessary steps
Being more accurate
Attempting more questions in the limited time provided
But shortcuts must only be used when you know the concept behind it. Otherwise, it might lead to carelessness.
Percentage questions are common in Quantitative Techniques. Learning a few basic percentage equivalents can make calculations much faster.
Remember:
10% = 1/10
20% = 1/5
25% = 1/4
50% = 1/2
75% = 3/4
12.5% = 1/8
For example, to calculate 25% of 640, instead of multiplying 640 by 25 and dividing by 100, simply calculate:
640 ÷ 4 = 160
Similarly, 12.5% of 800 can be calculated as:
800 ÷ 8 = 100
These conversions can save valuable seconds.
Ratio questions become easier when numbers can be simplified before performing calculations.
For example, if the ratio is:
48 : 72
Divide both numbers by 24:
= 2 : 3
Always check whether the numbers can be divided by a common factor before continuing with a calculation.
For proportion questions, cross multiplication can also be useful. If:
a/b = c/d
then:
a × d = b × c
Practise simplifying common ratios so that you do not spend unnecessary time on large numbers.
The basic average formula is:
Average = Total ÷ Number of Values
But you can sometimes calculate averages faster by using a central value.
For example, consider:
48, 50, 52
The numbers are equally spaced around 50, so the average is immediately:
50
This approach is useful when values are evenly distributed around a central number.
For larger sets, remember that:
Total = Average × Number of Values
This can help in questions where the total or missing value needs to be found.
Profit and loss questions can become lengthy if every step is calculated separately.
Remember the basic formulas:
Profit = Selling Price − Cost Price
Loss = Cost Price − Selling Price
Profit% = (Profit/Cost Price) × 100
Loss% = (Loss/Cost Price) × 100
For example, if an item costs ₹500 and is sold for ₹600:
Profit = ₹100
Profit percentage = 100/500 × 100 = 20%
The important point is that profit or loss percentage is generally calculated on the cost price, so do not use the wrong denominator.
Knowing common fraction-to-percentage conversions can make several CLAT Quant questions easier.
Some useful conversions are:
1/2 = 50%
1/3 ≈ 33.33%
1/4 = 25%
1/5 = 20%
1/8 = 12.5%
1/10 = 10%
1/20 = 5%

These are particularly helpful in Data Interpretation questions involving percentages.
For numbers close to 100, multiplication can sometimes be simplified.
For example:
98 × 25
Since 25 = 100/4:
98 × 25 = 9,800 ÷ 4 = 2,450
Similarly:
48 × 50 = 48 × 100 ÷ 2 = 2,400
Look for numbers such as 10, 20, 25, 50 and 100 because they often allow faster calculations.
Approximation can be useful when answer options are clearly different.
For example, if you need to calculate:
198 × 51
You can estimate it as:
200 × 50 = 10,000
If the answer choices are widely separated, this may be enough to identify the correct option.
However, do not use approximation when the options are very close or when the question requires an exact answer.

The questions in Data Interpretation might consist of tables, charts or graphs. The greatest error that can be made is to solve all the figures before knowing the question.
A more sensible method would be:
Firstly read the question.
Determine the row or column concerned.
Take into consideration only those figures required.
Select the right formula.
Solve and verify the answer.
When a question asks for percentage change between two figures, there is no need to solve other figures in the table.

These tricks work, but constant practice helps you make use of them.
Learn common fraction-percentage equivalents.
Learn multiplication tables.
Practice squares of numbers till 25 at least.
Work out Quantitative Techniques sets under time limits.

Try to solve questions slowly without getting rushed from the start.
Shortcuts must not slow down your process by making your preparation inaccurate.

When you get used to the specific calculation, you'll solve it faster naturally.
However, learning the correct shortcuts for CLAT 2027 Quant can make this Quantitative Techniques paper less difficult. It is advisable to pay attention to Percentages, Ratios & Proportions, Averages, Fractions, Profit & Loss, Approximation & Data Interpretation. In parallel, keep solving questions under time restrictions.
The idea here is not to use a trick to solve every question. The idea is to identify situations where a shortcut can help one save time without affecting accuracy.
