CLAT 2027: 4,045 NLU Seats for 80,000+ Aspirants; Check BA LLB Cutoffs for Top NLUs
The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is the only pathway to admission to participating NLUs. 26 NLUs and IIULER Goa participate in the centralised CLAT counselling process, offering admissions to 4,045 UG seats and 1,755 PG seats. With only a few thousand seats for 85,000+ candidates, CLAT is India's most competitive law entrance exam. Cutoffs for top NLUs like NLSIU Bengaluru, NALSAR Hyderabad, WBNUJS Kolkata, GNLU Gandhinagar, etc. remain under 500 ranks for the general category.
Besides NLUs, most law colleges across India accept CLAT scores for admissions. In the previous examination, 92,344 students had registered, of whom 88,657 appeared overall. CLAT UG alone saw 72,631 candidates taking the examination. With test takers increasing by 15–20% year-on-year, candidate numbers are expected to exceed 80,000 for the upcoming CLAT 2027 UG exam.
NLU Seat Matrix 2027
NLUs hold a status in legal education equivalent to IITs, IIMs, NITs, and NIDs in their respective fields. They offer around 4,045 undergraduate seats, alongside 1,755 LLM seats. Of the 4,045 UG seats, 3,693 are normal seats, 229 are NRI seats, and 123 are supernumerary seats across various categories. After the category reservations, approximately 1,500 seats remain available for general merit candidates. A majority of these seats are offered under the BA LLB program. Several universities also offer BBA LLB, BSc LLB, and BCom LLB courses. The detailed NLU seat matrix is given below:

CLAT 2026 Round-wise Closing Ranks and Marks: BA LLB Course
The CLAT admission process includes five rounds of centralized counselling, followed by institution-level spot rounds for any remaining vacant seats. NLSIU Bangalore, which offers 310 seats. opened at rank 2 and closed at rank 101 in round one and rank 108 in round two, freezing all general seats with no spot round. Similarly for NALSAR Hyderabad: Offers 132 seats. The closing rank was 148 in round one, 161 in rounds two and three, 164 in round four, and 168 in round five and spot counselling.
WBNUJS Kolkata, which offers 100 seats, opened at rank 102 and closed at rank 284 in round one. Coming down to the fifth round of counselling, the closing rank for the general category was 343, and the rank in the spot round was 485. NLU Jodhpur opened at rank 118 and closed at rank 310 in round one and reached rank 364 in round two. Another one in the top five NLUs list - GNLU Gandhinagar closed at rank 372 in round one (score of 96), rank 398 in round five, and rank 451 in the spot round. Admissions for general merit candidates generally close around rank 500 for the top five NLUs and around rank 2,500 across all NLUs nationwide during counselling rounds. Candidates should target round five cutoffs rather than relying on unpredictable spot round variations.
