The CLAT 2027 notification is tentatively scheduled for August 2026. The Consortium of NLUs has already created an Expert Committee of independent experts that will review how the CLAT 2027 exam will be conducted. Justice Indu Malhotra and many other justices head the committee. The committee has been created to suggest reviews for the upcoming CLAT 2027. The committee has also invited suggestions from students and other stakeholders for the CLAT 2027 exam. The committee is looking for suggestions related to the quality of the exam, structure of the exam, syllabus of CLAT 2027, and comparison of CLAT with other entrance exams like LSAT and LNAT in the US and UK, respectively.
The CLAT 2027 expert committee will comprise the following members:
Justice Indu Malhotra (Chairperson)
Prof. Dev Saif Gangjee, Professor of Law, St. Hilda’s College, University of Oxford (Co-Chair)
Prof. Tarunabh Khaitan, Professor of Public Law, LSE School of Law (Co-Chair)
Prof. Shyamkrishna Balganesh, Sol Goldman Professor of Law, Columbia Law School
Prof. Pritam Baruah, Professor and Dean, School of Law, BML Munjal University
Prof. Surabhi Ranganathan, Professor of International Law, University of Cambridge
The CLAT 2027 Committee of Independent Academic Experts has invited suggestions from students on the following topics:
The quality of questions in the exam.
Basic structure of the CLAT exam.
CLAT 2027 syllabus
Comparison of CLAT with other law entrance exams like LSAT and LNAT in the US and UK, respectively
With an expert committee already framed to review how the CLAT 2027 exam will be conducted, there are high chances of a major overhaul in the exam. Below are three major changes in the CLAT 2027 exam:
Candidates must not expect any major changes in the exam, as the CLAT 2027 exam is only a few months away now. The Consortium of NLUs will likely not announce any major changes in the exam pattern. Making changes in the CLAT 2027 exam pattern would invite backlash or litigation from students, as the preparation time is less than a year now. However, candidates can expect some clearer sectional intent as in the type of question framing might change.
The Expert Committee has invited suggestions on the CLAT 2027 syllabus. However, candidates should not expect big changes in the CLAT syllabus. The CLAT syllabus 2027 might be tightened a bit, with clearer specifications of the topics that will be asked. The Supreme Court had also questioned the Consortium, terming their questions “ambiguous.” The Consortium will instead focus on presenting the paper in a better manner. Also, questions will be framed only from the prescribed syllabus, as some questions were reported to be out of it.
Last year, the Supreme Court bashed the Consortium of NLUs for framing questions in a “casual manner”. The bench even proposed creating a permanent framework like NEET, JEE, etc., to conduct the CLAT exam. Also, the Consortium's decisions were legally challenged and eventually overturned. This year around, the Consortium of NLUs will look to set a paper considering the legality of questions. Also, there were many changes made in the final answer key and provisional key of the CLAT 2026 exam. So, the Consortium will definitely look to set a question paper with fewer or no errors this time.
