The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) law rankings denote the best law colleges in India. The Ministry of Education prepares the NIRF law rankings based on five parameters - Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR) Research and Professional Practice (RP) Outreach and Inclusivity (OI). The latest rankings were updated by the MoE in NIRF Law rankings 2023. NLSIU Bengaluru is the best-ranked law school in India ranked number 1 in the NIRF law rankings. NLU Delhi was ranked second in the NIRF rankings for top law schools. In this article we will discuss about the top 10 law schools as per NIRF rankings, admission process and more.

Admission Process of Top 10 Law Colleges in India

Talking about the admission process of these top 10 law colleges according to NIRF rankings, most of these colleges offer admission through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). The CLAT exam is conducted once every year for admissions to 24 participating NLUs. Five of the top 10 law colleges in India are NLUs. Out of these five NLUs, NLSIU Bengaluru, WBNUJS Kolkata, GNLU Gandhinagar and NALSAR Hyderabad offer admission through CLAT exam.

NLU Delhi conducts its separate entrance exam for admissions to 5-year LLB and LLM courses. The All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) is conducted once every year for admissions to NLU Delhi. The exam is conducted in offline centre-based mode. The university offers a total of 123 seats for admission in BA LLB course.

Coming to the remaining five colleges, Jamia Millia Islamia conducts its own entrance exam for admissions. The JMI BA LLB exam is conducted in offline mode once every year. The Symbiosis Law School, Pune accepts Symbiosis Law Admission Test (SLAT) scores for admissions. The SLAT exam is conducted twice every yearn for admissions to different Symbiosis Law Schools. Similarly, Shiksha ‘O’ Anusandhan conducts Shiksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Admission Test (SAAT) for admissions. Shiksha ‘O’ Anusandhan also accepts CLAT and LSAT—India scores for admissions.

IIT Kharagpur also offers a LLB course and admissions to this course are done on the basis of the IIT Kharagpur LLB entrance exam. BBAU Lucknow is the 10th best law school in India according to NIRF rankings and it accepts admissions based on its entrance exam. Candidates who have appeared for the CLAT or LSAT—India exam are exempted from the entrance test.
