The Bar Council of TamilNadu and Puducherry first came into existence as the Madras Bar Council under Bar Council Act, 1926. The Bar Council of TamilNadu and Puducherry is responsible for carrying out enrolment of advocates within its jurisdiction of the state of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Law graduates who are intending to practise law in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry must complete Bar Council of TamilNadu and Puducherry registration. The enrolment is one of the necessary steps to be eligible to appear for the All India Bar Examination (AIBE).
Upon clearing the AIBE, candidates will be granted a Certificate of Practice (CoP). In India, it is compulsory for law graduates to obtain a CoP to become an advocate. This rule has been in effect since 2009-10 onwards.
As per the AIBE eligibility criteria laid down by the Bar Council of India, candidates must have completed a 5-year LLB or a 3-year LLB programme to appear for the AIBE. The All India Bar Examination is a post enrolment examination. This means that candidates must be enrolled as an advocate with a state bar council before appearing for the exam.
The advocate enrolment is provisional and is subject to the candidate passing the exam. Further the enrolment as an advocate is valid only for two years. However, the candidate can continue to appear for the AIBE exam any number of times, even beyond two years after the enrolment.
Fresh law graduates can complete Bar Council of TamilNadu and Puducherry registration by visiting the official website and filling the application form. However, they must ensure they meet the Bar Council of TamilNadu and Puducherry eligibility criteria before filling up the application form.
Bar Council of TamilNadu and Puducherry Enrolment requirements
