NIRF 2026 Ranking: NLU Data Submission Offers Early Look at Placements Across Top Law Schools
Several National Law Universities (NLUs) have made their submitted NIRF 2026 placement data available, offering an early look at placements before the Ministry of Education releases the official rankings for law. The data includes the total number of graduates, students placed, students pursuing higher studies and median salary. WBNUJS Kolkata reported the highest median salary of Rs 20 lakh. It was followed by NLSIU Bengaluru at Rs 19 lakh and NALSAR Hyderabad at Rs 18 lakh. At the other end, DNLU Jabalpur reported the lowest median salary among the available NLU data of Rs 4.5 lakh.

The data show that median salary and placement percentage need to be read separately when comparing NLUs. Some universities report 100% placement, while others report a lower placement percentage despite relatively higher median salaries.
NALSAR has reported 100% placement, compared with 96.51% for NLSIU and 91.74% for WBNUJS. HNLU and NUALS, despite median salaries above Rs 15 lakh, have placement percentages of 73.87% and 70.96%, respectively.
NIRF 2026 NLU Placement Data: Placement Percentage vs Higher Studies
The 100% placement figures reported by some NLUs do not mean that every student in the graduating batch took up a job. The NIRF data also records students who opted for higher studies. At NALSAR, for example, 135 students graduated, 20 opted for higher studies, and 115 were placed. The 100% placement, therefore, was achieved from students available for placement. Similarly, HPNLU Shimla posts 97.22% placements, but 40 out of the 112 graduating students were shown in the higher education column. were reported under higher studies.

The year-on-year data shows that median salaries have fluctuated over the years across NLUs.
NLSIU Bengaluru recorded the largest increase among the universities listed, with its median salary rising from Rs 16 lakh in 2023-24 to Rs 19 lakh in 2024-25, an increase of Rs 3 lakh.
MNLU Mumbai and HPNLU Shimla both reported an increase of Rs 2 lakh, taking their median salaries from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 12 lakh. NLU Assam recorded an increase of Rs 1.9 lakh, while HNLU Raipur saw its median salary rise by Rs 1.5 lakh.
At the other end, NLU Odisha recorded the sharpest decline. Its median salary fell from Rs 14 lakh in 2023-24 to Rs 9 lakh in 2024-25, a decline of Rs 5 lakh.
NIRF 2026 Law Ranking Criteria
NIRF rankings assess law universities using five parameters: teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.
NLU placement and median salary form part of the graduation outcomes. Therefore, the placement data submitted by NLUs is one component of the broader NIRF evaluation and does not by itself determine the final ranking. The NIRF 2026 law ranking will provide the final scores and ranks once released by the Ministry of Education.
