    1. Supreme Court Closes 20-Year-Old Legislative Privilege Reference

    In the news: A seven-judge Bench headed by CJI Surya Kant closed a long-pending reference on Tuesday. It was about legislative privilege versus free speech. The case began in 2003, when the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a resolution against The Hindu's editors. The Assembly withdrew that resolution in 2004. This fact was noticed only on October 5. So the Court called the reference infructuous. It left the larger legal questions open for a future case.

    What CLAT 2027 aspirants should know

    • Article 194: Gives State Legislatures and their members powers, privileges and immunities.

    • Legislative privilege: Special rights that help a House work without outside interference.

    • Infructuous: A case that has lost its purpose, so no ruling is needed.

    In the news: CJI Surya Kant administered the oath to Justices Sunita Agarwal, Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Aparesh Kumar Singh on Tuesday. The Centre had notified their appointments a day earlier. The Collegium had recommended their names on September 28. The Court now has 37 judges against a sanctioned strength of 38, including the CJI. Cases pending are close to one lakh.

    What CLAT 2027 aspirants should know

    • Article 124: Deals with the establishment of the Supreme Court. Judges are appointed by the President.

    • Collegium: The system by which senior judges recommend appointments. It comes from the Judges Cases, not directly from the Constitution.

    • Justice Agarwal was Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court. Justice Upadhyay was Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. Justice Singh was Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court.

    In the news: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on October 5 ordered a CBI probe into corruption allegations linked to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's office. On Tuesday, the CBI filed an FIR against six people, including Rajbir Ghuman, the CM's Officer on Special Duty. It raided eight locations. Punjab has moved the Supreme Court. It argues that the order violates federalism. The CJI said the Court would hear the plea on October 8.
