What Will Not Change in CLAT 2027?

The following aspects will remain unchanged in the CLAT 2027 examination:

• CLAT exam pattern: There will be five sections, namely English language, current affairs including general knowledge, legal reasoning, logical reasoning and quantitative techniques.

• Syllabus: No new subjects have been introduced. Candidates can follow the existing CLAT 2027 syllabus.

• Section-wise weightage: English language (20%), current affairs including general knowledge (25%), legal reasoning (25%), logical reasoning (20%), and quantitative techniques (10%).

• Number of questions: The paper will continue to have 120 MCQs.

• Exam duration: Candidates will be given 120 minutes to complete the exam.

• Marking scheme: The marking scheme (+1 mark for each correct answer and -0.25 mark for each incorrect answer) will remain unchanged.

• Mode of examination: CLAT 2027 will remain in offline (pen-and-paper) mode.

Why is the Consortium Focusing on Question Quality?

CLAT has witnessed many disputes over question papers, answer keys and exam evaluation in the last few years. Several cases reached the High Courts and the Supreme Court, raising concerns about the quality of questions asked in the exam and the overall examination process.

In CLAT 2025, the Supreme Court found that there were errors in various questions and stayed the Delhi HC’s direction to revise the results. The Court also asked for clarity regarding the frequent issues with papers. The Court also initiated discussions on creating a stronger institutional framework for conducting the CLAT exam.

The issue continued during the CLAT 2026 examination. In the Consortium of National Law Universities vs. Avneesh Gupta case, the Allahabad High Court examined a dispute over a logical reasoning question. The Expert Panel found two correct answers, while the Consortium's Oversight Committee accepted only one. This dispute resulted in litigation regarding the CLAT 2026 merit list that further affected the counselling process.

CLAT Expert Committee Reforms Deferred to 2028

The repeated disputes over the CLAT question papers eventually led the Consortium of NLUs to constitute a five-member Expert Committee. The committee is headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Indu Malhotra. It reviewed the entire CLAT examination process, including question design, quality control and governance.

The committee has proposed several major reforms for both CLAT UG and PG exams. These include replacing the five-section CLAT UG paper with a three-section paper. It has recommended removing the GK and current affairs section completely and merging legal reasoning with logical reasoning. It also recommended having professional paper setters, a permanent governance mechanism and publication of sample papers.

But the Consortium has decided to keep the existing syllabus and exam pattern for CLAT 2027. The proposed changes are now open for public feedback and may be taken into account for implementation from CLAT 2028 after further review and suggestions.

What Should CLAT 2027 Aspirants Do?

Candidates should continue preparing as per the existing CLAT syllabus, weightage and exam pattern. There is no need to change study materials or subject-wise preparation. However, aspirants can expect more application-based questions in the CLAT 2027 exam.

CLAT aspirants should regularly solve CLAT previous years' question papers and attempt full-length mock tests based on the current pattern. Focus more on passage-based current affairs, legal and logical reasoning, reading comprehension and analytical problem-solving questions.
