Haryana Judicial Service Syllabus 2026: Prelims

Haryana judiciary preliminary exam has 125 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) to be attempted in two hours. Each question carries 4 marks, making the prelims exam a total of 500 marks. 0.8 marks are deducted for each wrong answer (1/5th or 20% negative marking). The prelims syllabus includes:

• Main Examination legal subjects

• National and international current affairs

• Indian legal history

• Constitutional development

• Everyday governance

• Analytical skills

• Logical reasoning

• Aptitude

The prelims is a qualifying test, and its marks are not counted in the final merit. Each question has five options, A, B, C, D and E. Candidates who do not want to attempt a question must darken option E. Leaving all five circles blank gives a penalty of 0.8 marks or one-fifth of a mark. If a candidate leaves all five circles blank for 13 or more questions, which is more than 10% of the paper, the candidate will be disqualified.

Candidates from the General and EWS categories need 150 marks. Reserved category candidates need 100 marks to qualify. Candidates up to 10 times the number of vacancies are shortlisted for the Haryana judicial service mains exam.

Haryana Judicial Service Exam Syllabus 2026: Mains

The Haryana civil judge mains syllabus has five papers. The first three are law papers, and the other two are language papers. These papers are:

• Civil Law-II

• Criminal Law

• English

• Hindi

The mains is descriptive (written) in nature. Each paper is to be attempted in three hours. The medium is English, except for the Hindi paper. Candidates are provided bare copies of legislative enactments in the examination hall.

Civil Law-I carries 200 marks. The syllabus includes:

Paper 2: Civil Law-II Syllabus

Civil Law-II paper carries 200 marks. The syllabus is given below:

• Hindu Law

• Mohammadan Law

• Customary Law

• Law of Registration

• Law of Limitation

Paper 3: Criminal Law Syllabus

The criminal law paper carries 200 marks. The syllabus prescribed for the HCS (JB) examination includes:

• Indian Penal Code, 1860

• Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973

• Indian Evidence Act, 1872

Paper 4: English Syllabus

English carries 200 marks. The paper includes essay writing, précis, words and phrases, comprehension and corrections. The essay requires candidates to write around 1,000 to 1,100 words.

Paper 5: Hindi Syllabus

Hindi paper carries 100 marks and is conducted in Devanagari script. The standard is aligned with the Matriculation Examination of the Haryana Board. The section covers areas such as essays, idioms and corrections.

The Haryana judiciary viva-voce carries 200 marks. The interview tests a candidate's:
