The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) XXI was conducted on June 7, 2026, by the Bar Council of India (BCI). While the Bar Council of India has not yet released the official AIBE 21 candidate statistics, previous year trends suggest that the number of candidates appearing for the examination is likely to exceed 2.51 lakh candidates recorded in AIBE 20.
AIBE is a mandatory examination that enables law graduates to practise as advocates in India. Over the last few years, AIBE has witnessed a steady increase in participation due to the growing number of law graduates and enrolled advocates appearing for the examination. This article analyses the expected AIBE 21 candidate statistics, previous years' participation trends, and pass percentages.

The number of candidates appearing for AIBE has grown rapidly in recent years. The number of candidates appearing for AIBE increased from 1.44 lakh in AIBE 18 to over 2.51 lakh in AIBE 20. This represents a growth of nearly 75% within two examination cycles.
Several factors have contributed to this increase. The Bar Council of India has continued to allow final-year law students to appear for the examination. At the same time, the growing number of law colleges and graduating batches has expanded the overall candidate pool. Since clearing AIBE remains mandatory for obtaining the Certificate of Practice, most law graduates eventually register for the examination, resulting in their consistently high participation.
AIBE is a qualifying examination and not a rank-based competitive test. Every candidate who scores the minimum qualifying marks prescribed by the Bar Council of India is considered qualified and becomes eligible for the Certificate of Practice. For AIBE 21, candidates are required to obtain the following minimum marks to qualify:
General and OBC candidates: 45% marks (45 marks out of 100)
SC, ST and PwD candidates: 40% marks (40 marks out of 100)

Note: If the Bar Council of India drops any questions while publishing the AIBE 21 final answer key 2026, the total marks of the examination are reduced. In such cases, the qualifying marks are revised proportionately based on the updated total marks.
