The AIBE 21 passing marks are the minimum scores required to qualify for the All India Bar Examination and obtain the Certificate of Practice. As per the prescribed qualifying criteria, General and OBC candidates must secure at least 45% marks. SC, ST and Persons with Disabilities candidates need 40% marks to pass the AIBE examination. Candidates who score equal to or above the AIBE 21 qualifying marks will receive the CoP, which is mandatory for practising law before courts and tribunals in India.

The Bar Council of India (BCI) conducted the AIBE 21 exam on June 7, 2026. The AIBE 21 result will be prepared on the basis of the final answer key. Since questions are sometimes withdrawn after the objection review process, the effective passing marks can vary slightly from the prescribed percentage. Understanding the AIBE 21 passing marks, previous-year qualifying trends and the impact of withdrawn questions will help candidates plan their preparation effectively.
Category | Qualifying Percentage | Passing Marks (Out of 100) |
General / OBC | 45% | 45 Marks |
SC / ST / Persons with Disability | 40% | 40 Marks |
The Bar Council of India often withdraws questions after reviewing objections submitted by candidates. Such questions are excluded from evaluation, reducing the total marks considered for preparing the result.
For example, in AIBE 20, five questions were withdrawn from all question paper sets. As a result, the total number of evaluated questions reduced from 100 to 95. Consequently, the qualifying marks for General category candidates were calculated as 45% of 95 questions, which came to 42.75 marks instead of 45 marks.
Candidates should therefore focus on maximising their raw score rather than targeting the exact qualifying threshold, as the final passing marks may change after the release of the AIBE 21 final answer key.
AIBE Exam | Total Questions Evaluated | General/OBC Passing % | General/OBC Passing Marks | SC/ST Passing % | SC/ST Passing Marks |
AIBE 20 | 95* | 45% | 42.75 | 40% | 38 |
AIBE 19 | 93* | 45% | 42 | 40% | 37 |
AIBE 18 | 93* | 45% | 42 | 40% | 37 |
AIBE 17 | 98* | 40% | 39 | 35% | 34 |
AIBE 16 | 95** | 40% | 38 | 35% | 33 |
* Total evaluated questions were reduced after withdrawal of certain questions from the final answer key.
** AIBE 16 passing marks were announced as 38 and 33 marks, respectively, after final evaluation.
Candidates who fail to secure the AIBE 21 passing marks will not receive the Certificate of Practice. However, candidates can appear in the next session, as there is no limit on the number of attempts for the All India Bar Examination. There are 7 highest-weighted subjects that account for 62% of the AIBE 21 question paper. Candidates should focus primarily on Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Civil Procedure, Evidence Law, Family Law and Contract-related laws while preparing for the next attempt. Strong preparation in these high-weightage subjects can significantly improve the chances of clearing the examination.
