CLAT 2026 Round 2 Seat Allotment: Top NLUs Opening & Closing Ranks Predictions

Isha GargUpdated on 16 Jan 2026, 03:47 PM IST

The CLAT 2026 second allotment list is scheduled to be released on January 22, 2026. The second allotment list is especially important for students who narrowly missed their top-choice National Law Universities (NLUs) in the CLAT first seat allocation 2026. In the first round, top law universities like NLSIU Bengaluru fill up their general seats almost immediately. However, in the CLAT second round allotment, many NLU seats become available because some students either drop out or do not pay their fees on time.

Looking closely at the opening and closing ranks for this phase helps predict how much the final cut-offs can drop. For most premier NLUs, the cut-off change is small, usually within 10 to 50 ranks. However, mid-tier and newer NLUs show much bigger cutoff shifts. Understanding this is essential for students to manage their expectations and make informed decisions during the ongoing CLAT counselling process 2026.

Essential Steps After CLAT Round 2 Allotment

After checking the CLAT second allotment result on the official portal, candidates must choose one of the following three options:

    • Freeze: Select this if the candidate is satisfied with the NLU allotted in round 2 of CLAT 2026. The candidate must pay the confirmation fee and secure the seat. They will not be considered for any further upgrades in subsequent rounds.

    • Float: Select this option if candidates want to accept the current seat but wish to be considered for a higher-preference NLU in the next round. Candidates must still pay the confirmation fee to hold their current seat.

    • Exit: Select this if candidates do not want to participate in the counselling process anymore. If they have already paid a confirmation fee but choose to exit, they may be eligible for a partial refund depending on when they exercise this option.
