Why Are Seats Vacant Despite CLAT Counselling?

Every year, a number of seats remain vacant despite a structured counselling process. The trend is not unique to CLAT 2026. Multiple factors contribute to these vacancies:

1. Preference Upgradation During Counselling

The CLAT counselling process allows candidates to float their allotted seats and seek higher preferences in subsequent rounds. As candidates move to better-ranked NLUs, seats vacated in lower-preference institutions often remain difficult to fill in the later stages.

2. Demand for Top NLUs
