When an aspirant is confronted with the question of whether 5000 is a good rank in CLAT 2025, the ideal place to look for the answer is the past CLAT cut-off trends. There are several other factors at play as well that will decide whether a 5000 rank in CLAT is good or not. These factors include the CLAT seat matrix, exam difficulty, and the number of candidates appearing for the exam. With a good rank in CLAT candidates can land a seat in the top-ranked NLUs. In this article, let’s try to understand the categories for which 5000 is a good rank in CLAT and also the marks needed to get that rank.
The Consortium of NLUs was conducted CLAT 2025 on December 1, 2024. Candidates can check their CLAT CLAT result 2025 was declared on Dec 7, 2024. The NLU admissions 2025 will be done through a centralised CLAT counseling process based on the candidate’s rank in the exam.

The candidate’s rank in the CLAT merit list is determined by the score obtained in the exam. However, if two or more candidates score the same marks, then the candidate’s rank is through a tie-breaker rule. The details are given below:
The candidate with higher marks in the legal reasoning section will be ranked higher.
If the tie persists, then age will be considered and the senior candidate will be ranked higher.
If the tie remains unresolved, then lots will be drawn randomly to assign the ranks

It’s essential to do a category-wise analysis of the admission chances to know if 5000 is a good rank in CLAT or not. Past years’ CLAT cut-offs show that a candidate from a general category has almost zero chance of making it to any NLU with a CLAT 5000 rank unless any seat is left vacant after the counselling process. A 5000 rank in CLAT is good enough for candidates from the SC/ST category for admission into most NLUs. Candidates from OBC and EWS categories can also get admission to some of the NLUs with a rank of 5000 in CLAT.
The table given below, prepared as per last year’s trends, tells us if candidates from various categories stand a chance for admission into top NLUs or not.
Category | NLSIU Bengaluru | NALSAR Hyderabad | WBNUJS Kolkata | NLU Jodhpur | GNLU Gandhinagar | MNLU Mumbai | RMLNLU Lucknow |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
General | No | No | No | No | No | No | No |
EWS | No | No | No | No | No | No | No |
OBC | No | No | Yes* | No | No | Yes* | No |
SC | No | No | No | Yes | Yes | Yes* | Yes* |
ST | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes* | Yes* |
*includes state-level reservation
Analysing the CLAT marks vs rank details tells us what is the good score in CLAT to get a CLAT 5000 rank. The analysis shows that a CLAT score of around 80+ marks will translate to a rank of 5000. The data shows a small difference in marks can lead to a larger gap in the candidate’s rank. The table given below provides the range of CLAT scores around the 5000 rank in CLAT.
Marks | Rank |
---|---|
80.25 - 80 | 4600-4800 |
80 - 79.5 | 4800-5000 |
79.50 - 79.25 | 5000-5200 |
79.25 - 78.75 | 5200-5400 |

Given below is the list of NLUs that candidates from various reservation categories can target. Other than the CLAT rank, the candidate’s NLU preferences will also play a part in determining whether they will get admission into an NLU or not. Candidates can gain CLAT 2025 seat allotment in only those NLUs that are part of their admission preferences.
Category | NLUs |
---|---|
General | - |
EWS | NUALS Kochi, MNLU Nagpur, MNLU Aurangabad, |
OBC | WBNUJS Kolkata, NLUJA Assam, MNLU Mumbai, MNLU Nagpur, MNLU Aurangabad |
SC | All NLUs except NLSIU Bengaluru and NALSAR Hyderabad |
ST |
Yes, candidates from SC/ST categories can get into most NLUs with 5000 rank in CLAT.
5000 is not a good rank for general, OBC, and EWS candidates for admission into top-ranked NLUs. However, it is a good rank for SC/ST candidates.
Candidates must score 80+ marks to get a 5000 rank.
Currently, CLAT is conducted in various cities across India, but as of now, there are no official test centers outside India, including in the UAE. Students residing abroad typically need to travel to India to appear for the exam. However, rules and centers may change in future, so I suggest keeping an eye on the official CLAT Consortium website, especially when the 2026 notification is released. If traveling to India is challenging, you can plan your trip in advance around the exam date. Also, for NRI or NRI-sponsored seats in Indian law colleges, some universities may have a different selection process that doesn’t require CLAT, so you can explore those options too.
Thank you,

Hello,
For CLAT PG 2026, if you aim for top NLUs like NALSAR, NLSIU and WBNUJS, a score of around 75+ marks (rank within 100 ) is generally good for the general category
Cut-offs change every year, so try to score as high as possible for a better chance.
Hope it helps !
Hello Aspirant,
No, you cannot use EWS certificate issued to your father in your name. In CLAT, EWS certificate is to be issued in the name of a candidate on the basis of family income and assets even if you are a minor. Since you are under 18, the certificate will still have your details but it will take your family income (with your father) into consideration. You will need to apply for your own EWS certificate through the local authority pre counselling.
