The Ministry of Education, Govt. of India has published the NIRF law rankings 2025 on September 4, 2025. The NIRF 2025 law ranking includes 27 non-NLUs excelling in legal education. Leading the list of top non-NLUs in NIRF 2025 law ranking include the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, Symbiosis Law School Pune, Jamia Millia Islamia, Aligarh Muslim University and Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan.
The NIRF law colleges rankings 2025 ranks the non-NLUs on various parameters such as teaching and learning resources, graduation outcomes, research activities, outreach activities, and perception. Top non-NLU such as IIT Kharagpur has a median salary package of Rs. 15 lakhs per annum for UG 3-year programme and Rs. 8 lakhs per annum for PG 2-year programme. Meanwhile, the median salary package of SLS Pune for UG 3-year and PG 1-year is Rs. 12 lakhs per annum and Rs. 18 lakhs for UG 5-year programme..

CLAT: The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities. The CLAT scores are accepted for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate law programs offered by 24 national law universities, IIULER Goa and over 60 affiliated colleges.
SLAT: The Symbiosis Law Admission Test (SLAT) is conducted by Symbiosis International (Deemed University) for admission to 5-year LLB programmes of the four Symbiosis Law Schools, namely SLS Pune, SLS Noida, SLS Nagpur, and SLS Hyderabad.
CUET: The Common University Entrance Test Law is conducted by the National Testing Agency. Through this exam, candidates can get admission to UG and PG law programmes offered by private universities that accept CUET scores.
SLS AIAT: SLS All India Admission Test (AIAT) is conducted by Symbiosis International University for admission to the three-year LLB and LLM programmes of Symbiosis Law Schools.
IIT Kharagpur LLB entrance exam: Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur conducts the IIT Kharagpur LLB entrance exam for admission to its 3-year LLB programme offered at Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law. In the IIT Kharagpur LLB exam, there are around 100 multiple-choice questions from various subjects such as mathematics, English, science, legal aptitude and logical reasoning.
AMU entrance exam: Aligarh Muslim University conducted the AMU entrance exam for admission to the BA LLB programme at the university. The AMU entrance exam for the BA LLB programme comprises 100 objective-type questions from English, current affairs and general knowledge, along with reasoning and aptitude. The entrance exam is conducted in offline mode at test centres in Aligarh (U.P.), Kolkata (W.B.), New Delhi and Kozhikode (Kerala).
CUSAT CAT LLB entrance exam: Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) conducts the CUSAT CAT LLB. The CUSAT Common Admission Test is conducted for admission to 5-year LLB and 3-year LLB programmes for the participating institutes. The CUSAT LLB entrance exam syllabus tests the candidate’s ability in general awareness, reasoning ability, and legal knowledge.
Lucknow University LLB Entrance Exam: Lucknow University LLB entrance exam is an offline pen and paper-based test mode university-level entrance examination conducted by Lucknow University. Through LU LLB, Lucknow University offers 120 seats in the 5-year LLB and 320 seats in the 3-year LLB programmes. The exam pattern for both programmes is the same, where the candidates will be rewarded two marks for each correct answer, and no negative marking is applied for incorrect responses.
AIL LET Entrance Exam: The Army Institute of Law offers a 5-year integrated BA LLB programme through an entrance test popularly known as AIL LET. The institute also offers an LLM programme through AIL LET PG. The entrance exam is conducted at the designated test centres across the country. The online-based AIL LET is a two-hour-long test consisting of 200 MCQ-based questions.

While NLUs are costly, you can still pursue government-funded law education through state-funded universities and their affiliated colleges that accept CLAT scores, such as institutes like Banaras Hindu University and Aligarh Muslim University.

It is always better to take the CLAT exam right after Class 12 if your goal is to build a career in law, because CLAT UG is specifically designed for admission into integrated five-year law programs like BA LLB, BCom LLB, or BBA LLB. Appearing after Class 12 saves you time, as you complete both graduation and law together in a single course. On the other hand, if you first complete graduation and then plan for law, you will not be eligible for CLAT UG but instead for CLAT PG, which is meant for admission into LLM programs. This path takes longer, because you first spend three or four years on graduation and then add another three years in an LLB program if you choose not to go for an integrated course. So, if you are already sure about pursuing law as your career, writing CLAT right after Class 12 is the smarter and time-saving option, while writing it after graduation makes sense only if you are considering higher studies in law or a shift in career later.

Both the colleges Maharaja Agrasen (MAIMS) or Gitarattan (GIBS) are affiliated to IP University and allows admission either by CLAT or IPU CET Law. Without either of these exams, your admission is NOT accepted there. You can try looking for management quota seats in these colleges if you have got good marks in 12th class.
