Amity University-Noida Law Admissions 2026
Among top 100 Universities Globally in the Times Higher Education (THE) Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026
An LLB degree from Government Law College, Mumbai, may lead to polarised placement outcomes, with some students securing jobs at as low as ₹3 LPA, while others securing offers at ₹10-16 LPA. A Right to Information (RTI) response received by Careers360 reveals a wide salary gap among LLB graduates at GLC Mumbai for the same batches. The placement data also appear to support a popular but unspoken perception among students that a 3-year LLB may be less rewarding than a 5-year LLB in the initial years due to differences in the pay structures.
Unlike national law universities (NLUs), which offer flexible academic curricula and modern infrastructure, GLC - Asia’s oldest law college- sticks to conventional academic approaches. The law college does not provide placement reports; therefore, the RTI response from GLC provides a rare opportunity to evaluate the graduation outcomes of an institute that operates outside the government’s National Institutional Framework (NIRF).

GLC did not disclose the packages secured by a majority of students. This puts a significant limitation on interpreting the RTI data. In the last two years, 51 out of 77 students in the 5-year LLB did not disclose their packages to the GLC’s Recruitment Coordination Committee (RCC). The batch intake for this program is 240. This pattern holds for the 3-year LLB, where 18 students were placed in the last two years, of which eight did not disclose their packages. The 3-year LLB intake is 300.
The non-disclosure of packages to the RCC hints at off-campus hustle, a common practice opted for by students at law schools across the country. Therefore, the RTI data, including median salaries, should be interpreted with this caveat in mind.
Year | Number of students placed (3-year LLB) | Undisclosed (3-year LLB) | Number of students placed (5-year LLB) | Undisclosed (5-year LLB) | Total undisclosed |
2025 | 5 | 1 | 34 | 24 | 25 |
2024 | 13 | 6 | 43 | 27 | 33 |
Total | 18 | 7 | 77 | 51 | 58 |
GLC’s placements, when read alongside the broader industry and NLU placement trends, show a clear pattern; employers may be favouring 5-year LLB over 3-year LLB. Even when the recruitment coordination committees push the applications of both 3 and 5-year LLB students, the employers may end up hiring 5-year LLB students.
GLC records a clear gap between the number of students placed in 3-year LLB and 5-year LLB programs. While only 18 students were placed from the 3-year LLB in the last two years, the 5-year LLB, with a relatively smaller batch size, saw 77 students securing jobs during the same period.
There is no justification for this trend since both 3 and 5-year LLB degrees are equivalent on paper. Several recruitment notices at GLC’s placement portal also mention LLB without specifying its type. But the modern integrated LLB course is considered closer to meeting the industry demands. Due to its longer duration, the 5-year LLB provides relatively higher exposure to legal studies and internships. This plays a crucial role in shaping employers’ perception.
Placement trends in national law universities (NLUs) have further cemented this belief. Top law firms and companies hunt fresh talent from integrated LLB courses run by NLUs. The median salary offered to students from top-tier NLUs ranges from ₹14-20 LPA.
| NLU | Number of Students Graduating | Total Placed | Median Salary | Number of Students Opted for Higher Studies |
| NLSIU Bengaluru | 91 | 83 | ₹19 LPA | 5 |
| NALSAR Hyderabad | 135 | 115 | ₹18 LPA | 20 |
| WBNUJS Kolkata | 127 | 111 | ₹20 LPA | 6 |
| HNLU Raipur | 141 | 82 | ₹16.50 LPA | 30 |

In contrast, GLC’s placement numbers appear modest. The nondisclosure of packages makes it more complicated to draw granular insights into the graduation outcomes.
The RTI reveals that just five students secured jobs through the institute in 2025-26. The highest package was ₹6.6 LPA, and the lowest was ₹3 LPA. One student’s package was not disclosed.

In 2024-25, GLC Mumbai posted a slightly better record with 13 students securing jobs. Among the remaining students, one student managed to secure placement at ₹14 LPA. Four students secured jobs at ₹5.15 LPA each, while two were placed at ₹9.19 LPA.

The 5-year LLB program at GLC Mumbai is among the most sought-after among students who appear in MH CET Law. The closing percentile for GLC rarely drops below the 99th percentile, indicating a cut-throat competition for admissions.
35 students from this course were placed in the 2025-26 graduating batch, of which the packages of 24 students were not disclosed. The highest package was ₹12 LPA, and the lowest was ₹4.5 LPA.

The 2024-25 graduating batch saw 43 students securing jobs. Of these, the salaries of 27 students were not disclosed to the RCC. This batch recorded ₹16.20 LPA as the highest salary. The lowest package was ₹5.15 LPA.

The pay scales within the same batches reveal a broader phenomenon in the legal profession, which students must understand. The legal profession has two broad streams: litigation and law firms/in-house positions in corporate houses. Think tanks and policy-making centres are evolving and creating a new segment.
Litigation has remained a low-paying profession with graduates starting at as low as ₹3 LPA, and salaries rarely cross the ₹6 LPA mark. Litigation requires patience and consistent effort, and may take years to become a financially rewarding profession.
Corporate and law firms show the glittering side of the legal profession. More money flows with better pay scales, and colleges pivot their marketing around it. Top-tier law firms such as Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, AZB & Partners and Trilegal hire NLU graduates at salaries ranging from ₹14 to 20 LPA. Mid-tier firms offer packages ranging from ₹6 to 12 LPA, depending on the work and law school tag the student brings.

Given a small data size, limitations exist while interpreting the data. But a few conclusions stand out.
First, the 5–year LLB outperforms the 3-year LLB in all placement metrics: the number of students placed, the salaries offered, and the highest salary. Salaries above 6 LPA usually indicate corporate placements; so, if corporate employment is the goal, a 5-year LLB is worth considering.
Secondly, the raw placement numbers are modest relative to its batch size; this data raises questions about how GLC’s reputation among the legal community translates into placements.
GLC is the oldest law institution in the country with the largest alumni base. Located near Bombay High Court and in the financial capital of the country, it enjoys one of the best locational advantages. Despite this, if the campus placements are modest, the question must be asked: How much effort does the institute make to attract companies, corporate firms, and think tanks?
Third, the salary range within a batch is striking. One gets a job at ₹4.5 LPA, while another secures a package of ₹16 LPA. This reflects the reality of the legal profession; uneven opportunities and pay scale differences, apparently streams - litigation and corporate matters, in deciding how rewarding the career becomes from the initial years.
GLC’s reputation is real. However, the honest reading of this data brings out more clarity. GLC’s reputation doesn’t directly translate into a high-paying career in the initial years. The placement portal of GLC does provide opportunities for students to secure internships and jobs. However, they depend more on students' own initiatives, internships and networking than institutional support.
