Ranked 1 st among Top Law Schools of super Excellence in India - GHRDC | NAAC A+ Accredited | #36 by NIRF
CLAT Application Date:01 Aug' 25 - 31 Oct' 25
The National Law Universities, often referred to as flagbearers of legal education in India are the top law schools in the country with very well-organized placement cells and median packages often exceeding Rs. 10 LPA. However, India has only 26 NLUs, offering close to 3500 seats in integrated LLB. Meanwhile, the number of annual LLB enrollments is close to 4 Lakh, highlighting the fact that most of the students have to look beyond NLUs.
The number of non-NLU law colleges in India is close to 1700, a majority of which are privately owned.
However, when it comes to placements in these colleges, only a few manage to compete with the NLUs. many law colleges lack robust placement cells, moot court infrastructure and internship opportunities, leading to subpar learning quality. This article attempts to filter out the law colleges to suggest the 5 best non-NLU law colleges with placement packages ranging from Rs. 6 LPA to 18 LPA.
Established in 1977, Symbiosis Law School, Pune, started a decade before the NLSIU Bangalore, the first NLU was established. Symbiosis Law School, Pune has been consistently ranked among the top 10 law schools in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework, a government of India ranking framework.
Ranked 1 st among Top Law Schools of super Excellence in India - GHRDC | NAAC A+ Accredited | #36 by NIRF
NAAC A+ Grade | Admissions open for 5 year Integrated LLB & LLB programs | Approved by Bar Council of India
While the law school offers BA LLB, BBA LLB, 3-year LLB, and LLM courses, the median packages offered in 5-year LLB and 3-year LLB placements for the 2023-24 batch were Rs. 18 LPA and Rs. 12 LPA respectively. If we compare SLS Pune placements with those of NLUs, it is close to what tier NLUs offered to their students of the same batch.
Admissions to 5-year LLB courses at SLS Pune are offered through the Symbiosis Law Admission Test (SLAT), whereas, 3-year LLB admissions are conducted through the All India Law Admission Test (AIAT). These entrance exams for the current academic year have been conducted in December.
The second law college on the list is IIT Kharagpur, known mostly for its engineering courses. IIT Kharagpur has Rajiv Gandhi School Of Intellectual Property Law which offers 3-year LLB and LLM courses.
These courses are considered ideal for engineering, medical or science graduates who wish to study intellectual property rights.
IPR as a law specialisation has over the years seen an upward trend as Indian firms involved in engineering and innovation are now keen to protect their intellectual properties. The IPR lawyers play a crucial role in ensuring that rights are protected under Indian law and the WTO’s TRIPS agreement.
As for the placements, the 2020-21 batch of IIT Kharagpur secured a median salary of Rs. 18 LPA in the campus placements. The NIRF 2024 data shows that 29 students from the batch of 31 students were placed. Even for the batch of 2019, the median salary was Rs. 9 LPA, with 31 students from a batch of 47 getting placed.
However, IIT Kharagpur doesn’t offer a 5-year integrated LLB, not even in the form of Btech LLB which would have allowed students to study law after Class 12th.
Aligarh Muslim University, a prominent central university in Uttar Pradesh offers BA LLB. The Faculty of Law at AMU is among those few law schools in India that are not just affordable but also have healthy placement records.
AMU is ranked as the 12th best law school by the NIRF Law 2024 ranking. The NIRF data also shows the placement records of the university. The 2023 graduating batch of AMU secured a median salary of Rs. 12.50 LPA. The LLM placements were also equally good and the median salary was Rs. 10.32 LPA. This puts the Faculty of Law, AMU as one of the best universities in India from a return on investment perspective.
Next, in the list of Jamia Millia Islamia, which is again a central university and carries a Muslim minority status. Meaning, that up to 50% of seats are reserved for Muslim students here.
Similar to AMU, JMI also offers BA LLB and LLM. The university has an entrance exam for BA LLB. JMI is based in Delhi, both the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court of India are within 10 km from the law campus. Along with this, corporate companies in Gurugram and Noida ensure that students at JMI get internships and job opportunities. However, as the placement cell at JMI is relatively new, students are required to put some effort into finding internships.
As for the placements, the NIRF 2024 data shows the graduating batch of 2023 in JMI secured a median package of Rs. 8.40 LPA. The median salary in LLM placements for the same year was Rs. 9.60 LPA.
Finally, the Army Institute of Law (AIL) in Mohali is a good option for BA LLB, especially for children of army personnel. While the institute offers 100 seats in BA LLB, 75 seats remain reserved for wards of Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force Personnel. Of the remaining 25 seats, 20 are again reserved for the Punjab residence category, whereas, only 05 seats are available for the all-India general category.
The institute is ranked the 30th best law school in India by NIRF 2024 law ranking. While the ranking for AIL has dropped in recent years. The placement records have been fairly consistent, with a median salary of approx. Rs. 6 LPA in each of the last three graduating batches.
Finally, students should also note here that all the law colleges discussed in this article have separate university-level entrance exams. None of these accept CLAT scores. If they have missed out on CLAT, or are not likely to get into tier 1 or tier 2 NLUs, they should consider applying for these law schools.
On Question asked by student community
Hello,
While NLUs are costly, you can still pursue government-funded law education through state-funded universities and their affiliated colleges that accept CLAT scores, such as institutes like Banaras Hindu University and Aligarh Muslim University.
I hope it will clear your query!!
It is always better to take the CLAT exam right after Class 12 if your goal is to build a career in law, because CLAT UG is specifically designed for admission into integrated five-year law programs like BA LLB, BCom LLB, or BBA LLB. Appearing after Class 12 saves you time, as you complete both graduation and law together in a single course. On the other hand, if you first complete graduation and then plan for law, you will not be eligible for CLAT UG but instead for CLAT PG, which is meant for admission into LLM programs. This path takes longer, because you first spend three or four years on graduation and then add another three years in an LLB program if you choose not to go for an integrated course. So, if you are already sure about pursuing law as your career, writing CLAT right after Class 12 is the smarter and time-saving option, while writing it after graduation makes sense only if you are considering higher studies in law or a shift in career later.
For CLAT, the most important topics are from Legal Reasoning, Current Affairs & GK, the Indian Constitution, English Language, Quantitative Techniques and Logical Reasoning. For a brief detail you can go through the following link: https://law.careers360.com/articles/clat-important-topics
Thank You.
Hi dear candidate,
Both the colleges Maharaja Agrasen (MAIMS) or Gitarattan (GIBS) are affiliated to IP University and allows admission either by CLAT or IPU CET Law. Without either of these exams, your admission is NOT accepted there. You can try looking for management quota seats in these colleges if you have got good marks in 12th class.
