The AIBE 20 (XX) result 2025 is a significant milestone for law graduates in India. The AIBE 20 exam, held on November 30, 2025, is the final step required to get a permanent license to practice law in court. The AIBE results are expected to be announced in late January or February 2026. To understand what to expect, it is helpful to look at how the exam has changed over the last five years. Data from 2021 to 2025 indicates that it takes an average of 85 to 90 days for the AIBE results to be declared. Before AIBE XVIII, the AIBE passing marks were lower, but the Bar Council of India (BCI) has increased them to ensure that only well-prepared lawyers enter the profession.
AIBE exam session | Exam date | Result date | Gap (in days) |
AIBE XIX (19) | Dec 22, 2024 | Mar 21, 2025 | 89 |
AIBE XVIII (18) | Dec 10, 2023 | Mar 26, 2024 | 107 |
AIBE XVII (17) | Feb 05, 2023 | Apr 28, 2023 | 82 |
AIBE XVI (16) | Oct 31, 2021 | Feb 03, 2022 | 95 |
AIBE XV (15) | Jan 24, 2021 | Mar 30, 2021 | 65 |
AIBE session | General/OBC cut-off (%) | SC/ST cut-off (%) | Total marks |
AIBE XV - AIBE XVII | 40% | 35% | 100 |
AIBE XVIII - AIBE XX | 45% | 40% | 100 |
One of the biggest changes in the last five years is the increase in passing marks. For a long time, the AIBE passing mark was set at 40%. However, to improve the quality of lawyers in India, the BCI raised this requirement. Starting from AIBE 18, the passing mark for General and OBC students was raised from 40% to 45%. For SC, ST, and disabled candidates, it was raised from 35% to 40%.
Once the AIBE 20 result 2025 is announced on the official website, successful candidates must obtain their Certificate of Practice (CoP). This document is the only legal license that allows candidates to argue cases and represent clients in any court, tribunal, or administrative body in India.
Under the Advocates Act, 1961, no law graduate who finished their degree after 2010 can legally practice law without a CoP. Practising without this certificate is considered unauthorised and unethical. Appearing in court without clearing the AIBE could be treated as professional misconduct under the Advocates Act. The Supreme Court has also proposed that advocates must mention their AIBE qualification status in every Vakalatnama to ensure only licensed professionals are practising.
To collect the Certificate of Practice (CoP) for AIBE 20 (XX) in 2026, candidates will need to visit their State Bar Council office with the following documents:
AIBE 20 result scorecard
Provisional enrollment certificate
3-year or 5-year LLB degree and marksheets
Valid identity proof: Aadhaar card, PAN card, or voter ID
2-4 recent coloured passport photographs
Caste or disability certificate
