In order to become an advocate in India, a law graduate has to pass the All India Bar Examination (AIBE). According to the AIBE eligibility criteria, a candidate has to be enrolled with a state bar council before appearing for the AIBE exam. It should be noted that the AIBE exam is mandatory for candidates who pursued their law degree from 2009-10 onwards.

Validity of Enrolling with Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh for AIBE

The AIBE is a post-enrolment exam. This means any candidates who want to practice law in Uttar Pradesh need to fill out the registration form for the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh and enrol with it before appearing for the AIBE exam. The provisional enrolment is valid for two years on an undertaking that the candidate would pass the exam within 2 years of the date of enrollment.

However, the candidates can continue to appear for the All India Bar Examination as many times after the provisional enrolment. The result, therefore, is that any candidate who is provisionally enrolled is allowed to appear for the AIBE exam not just for two years beyond but for any number of times till he or she passes the exam. Questions related to AIBE

On Question asked by student community

Have a question related to AIBE ?

No, a person cannot practice law in India without passing the All-India Bar Examination (AIBE). After completing an LLB degree from a recognized university, a law graduate must enroll with a State Bar Council and must clear the AIBE exam conducted by the Bar Council of India. Only after passing the exam, the advocate receives a Certificate of Practice , which allows him or her to practice law in any court in India.

So, without clearing AIBE, one cannot legally appear or argue in court.

Tip - Prepare well and be a successful lawyer.

Hello, Here is a clear and simple breakdown of who is eligible for the AIBE 20 (All India Bar Examination).

To be eligible for AIBE 20, you essentially need to have completed two main steps after your schooling:

  • You must have a 3-year LL.B degree or a 5-year integrated LL.B degree (like B.A. LL.B, B.Com LL.B, etc.). The most important part is that your degree must be from a college or university that is recognized by the Bar Council of India (BCI).
  • After you get your law degree, you cannot directly apply for the AIBE. You must first enroll as an Advocate with your respective State Bar Council. Once you enroll, you will get a unique enrollment number. This enrollment number is required to register for the AIBE 20 exam.

In short, the only people who can apply for AIBE 20 are those who have already graduated with a law degree and have also officially registered themselves as advocates with a State Bar Council.

It depends on the specific rules and regulations of the AIBE examination and how strictly they are enforced, you can also check the official website or contact the concerned authorities.
