Amity University-Noida Law Admissions 2026
Among top 100 Universities Globally in the Times Higher Education (THE) Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026
The NIRF 2026 data submitted by National Law Universities (NLUs) show a wide disparity in placement outcomes. Top-tier NLUs have shown consistency with median salaries ranging from ₹13 to ₹20 LPA. The median salary in mid-tier NLUs ranges between ₹16 LPA and ₹6 LPA. The placement percentage also falls dramatically for mid-tier and newer NLUs. The data shows established universities are more likely to be preferred by recruiters, law firms, institutions and corporates over newer ones, busting the myth that NLU-tag provides equal opportunities to students.
The median salary and placement percentages are crucial components of the Graduation Outcomes (GO) parameter — one of the five criteria used in NIRF Law rankings. GO carries 25% weightage, making it a significant measure in ranking. Within this parameter, placement and higher studies (40 marks) and median salary (25 marks) form a significant part.
The NLU's placement data and median salary serve as key determining factors for students while choosing a law school for higher education. While all top-tier NLUs have strong academic and placement support, mid-tier and lower-ranked NLUs vary in academic reputation and the opportunities they offer to students.
Take the example of RMNLU Lucknow, a mid-tier NLU with strong student preference, which has consistently recorded a median salary of ₹7 LPA for the last three graduating batches. In contrast, HNLU Raipur, another mid-tier NLU, placed over 73% of its students with a median salary of ₹16.5 LPA. At first glance, this huge gap in placements of two mid-tier NLUs highlights the employability of institutions. However, a closer look reveals that RMNLU Lucknow has a strong culture of students preparing for the judiciary and civil service exams.
The newer NLUs struggle during placements. HPNLU (established in 2016) has been an exception as per the data submitted by it. The university placed 97% of its students from the graduation batch of the 2024-25 academic year, with a median salary of ₹12 LPA. In contrast, MPDNLU (established in 2018) has placed just over 27% of its students with a median salary of ₹4.50 LPA for the same year.

Despite being government universities, NLUs are costlier than other public law institutions. The yearly fees for the 5-year LLB programme range from ₹3-5 lakh per year, leading to an overall cost of around ₹15-25 lakh. Given the cost involved in pursuing a 5-year LLB from NLUs, median salaries above ₹10 LPA indicate that the investment can be recovered within two to three years of employment.
Top NLUs such as NLSIU Bengaluru, NALSAR Hyderabad, WBNUJS Kolkata, and NLU Delhi report strong outcomes. While NLSIU, NALSAR, and WBNUJS record median salaries in the ₹18-20 LPA range, NLU Delhi reports a median salary of ₹13.19 LPA. This indicates good return on investment and consistent demand from top law firms and corporate recruiters.
Following the top-tier NLUs, the median salaries decline across mid-tier and low-tier NLUs. Mid-tier NLUs like HNLU Raipur and NUALS Kochi provide a median salary of ₹15 to ₹16.5 LPA. Other mid-tier and low-tier NLUs have median salaries in the range of ₹10-12 LPA. Such universities include CNLU Patna, MNLU Mumbai, and HPNLU Shimla.

The percentage of placements remains doubtful as many universities tend to achieve a higher placement percentage by moving the unplaced students in the ‘Higher Education’ column while reporting the data.
For example, NUSRL Ranchi and CNLU Patna report 27 and 23 students in higher studies, respectively, contributing to their overall 100% placement. HPNLU Shimla also reports a 97.22% placements, with 40 out of 112 (35.7%) students under the ‘Higher Studies’ section.
HNLU Raipur reported 30 out of 141 students in higher studies in the academic year 2024-25, accounting for nearly 21% of the batch.
The top NLUs, such as NLSIU Bengaluru and WBNUJS Kolkata, also have over 90% placements along with the highest median salaries. The difference is that they have very few students opting for higher studies. NLSIU shows only 5 students opting for higher studies, while WBNUJS and NLU Delhi have 6 and 12 students, respectively.
Some mid-tier NLUs like HNLU Raipur, NUALS Kochi and MNLU Mumbai have placed around 70% of their graduating batch. Some emerging NLUs, such as DNLU Jabalpur and DSNLU Visakhapatnam, have reported around 30% placements.
The most reliable options for CLAT 2026 aspirants are the top-tier NLUs: NLSIU Bengaluru, NALSAR Hyderabad, and WBNUJS Kolkata. These NLUs offer high median salaries with strong placement percentages, becoming the safest choices in terms of both recruitment opportunities and return on investment. NLU Delhi has a good placement rate of 79% with a strong median salary of ₹13.19 LPA. The university also attracts students interested in litigation, policy, and judiciary pathways as well.
Mid-tier NLUs like HNLU Raipur, NUALS Kochi, and MNLU Mumbai offer decent median salaries (₹12-₹16.5 LPA) but have lower placement rates than top NLUs. These institutions are often chosen by law aspirants based on their rank, location preference, or interest in specialised courses.
Lower-tier NLUs such as DSNLU Visakhapatnam and DNLU Jabalpur show low campus placements in the range of 25% to 32%. However, this does not imply low career value. In many cases, students opt for off-campus recruitment in litigation, judiciary exams, or higher academic studies.
The NIRF law rankings, median salary, and placement data provide valuable information, but there are some limitations. The median salary does not show the salary distribution for the batch. This limits a detailed understanding of actual hiring trends in the legal profession.
The data submitted by universities also does not provide a clear breakdown of students placed in various sectors. It does not distinguish between corporate law, litigation, judiciary preparation, and policy roles. The off-campus placements secured by several students may not be counted in the NIRF data reporting.
Despite several limitations, NIRF law placement statistics are good for relative comparisons among NLUs. Students can combine the placement data and ranking with other aspects of the law schools instead of going after the NLU-brand tag. CLAT aspirants should first consider their career goals while choosing which NLU to join. They should assess faculty, curriculum alignment with industry standards, internship opportunities, location and combine all this understanding with placement data when choosing a law school for higher education.
