The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore, is the most preferred law university in CLAT 2026. The first round of allotment saw 91 students from the top 100 opting for NLSIU, indicating a cut-throat competition. The university is consistently ranked at number 1 by the NIRF law ranking, with median salary during placements ranging from Rs. 16 to 18 LPA in previous years.
The Consortium of National Law Universities will publish the CLAT 2026 second allotment list on January 22, 2026. Only a few seats may be allotted in the second round, as a majority of students lock their seats in the first round. Fresh allotments to NLSIU will be announced only if previously shortlisted candidates withdraw from the admission process.

The consortium published the CLAT 2026 first merit list on January 7, 2026. The table below details the CLAT 2026 round 1 cut-off for NLSIU Bangalore for all categories of students.
NLU | General | OBC | EWS | SC | ST |
NLSIU Bengaluru | 101 | 1018 | 702 | 3072 | 5000 |
The consortium re-evaluates the seats after concluding the first round of counselling. Various factors affect the availability of seats at NLSIU Bengaluru after the first round of admissions.
The last year cut-off shows NLSIU closed general category admission at AIR 112. This year, first round admission for this category has closed at 101; however, the new allotments will be announced only if some candidates decide to withdraw, upgrade to different NLUs or fail to complete their admission processes.
Similarly, OBC cutoffs have closed at 1018 in the 2026 CLAT round 1 counselling. Last year, the cut-off closed at 1396. When comparing the CLAT 2026 round 1 closing rank with the CLAT 2025 final round, trends show that ranks in the top-tier NLUs, such as NLSIU Bengaluru, fall the least. Students who secure these seats rarely vacate them for other options. However, candidates have a chance of securing a seat in CLAT Round 2 counselling if their rank is less than 50 positions below the Round 1 closing rank.
EWS candidates are unlikely to get a seat in the upcoming counselling round, as the CLAT 2026 round 1 cut-off was 702, and last year the final round concluded at 703. The chances might increase if any candidates withdraw from the CLAT counselling process.
For the SC and ST categories, the closing ranks for Round 1 in 2026 are 3072 and 5000, respectively. This is a significant shift from last year, where the final cutoffs were at 2881 for SC and 3396 for ST. Such a change is quite rare for top institutions like NLSIU Bengaluru. A primary reason for last year's tighter ranks was that only three rounds of counselling were conducted. However, the CLAT 2026 counselling process is expected to return to the usual five-round format. These categories might experience a bit more flexibility in the upcoming rounds.
NLU | General Closing Rank | OBC Closing rank | EWS Closing rank | SC Closing rank | ST Closing rank |
NLSIU Bengaluru | 112 | 1396 | 703 | 2881 | 3396 |
Candidates are offered three choices during the CLAT 2026 counselling process. They can choose to Freeze, Float, or Exit the process.
Freeze: Candidates who wish to accept the seat at NLSIU Bangalore and want to secure their admission must choose this option. They must pay the confirmation and the university fee. They will be removed from participating in the upcoming CLAT 2026 counselling rounds.
Float: This option is for candidates who have been assigned a lower-preference NLU but are hoping to upgrade to other NLUs in the upcoming CLAT counselling rounds. They need to pay the confirmation fee to keep their current seat while still being eligible for an upgrade.
Exit: This choice is for students who decide they no longer want to be part of the CLAT 2026 counselling process. Once they select this option, they will not be included in any future allotment lists.
