The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2026 exam follows a strict code of conduct. The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) released a notification last year stating the code of conduct to be followed by candidates. Candidates are advised to read the instructions mentioned on the CLAT 2026 admit card as well. They must avoid carrying the prohibited items to the exam centre. Additionally, they must follow the CLAT 2026 dress code. Not following these guidelines might result in penalties like disqualification, criminal cases or other disciplinary action. This article discusses the dos and don’ts candidates must follow on the CLAT 2026 exam day.
Here is the list of things candidates must follow on CLAT exam day.
Arrive early: Students must arrive at the CLAT exam centre at least an hour before the exam starts. No one will be allowed to enter the exam hall 15 minutes after the exam has begun.
Bring relevant documents: It is important to bring the admit card with a valid ID proof to the exam centre.

Use correct pen type: All answers shall be marked using a black or blue ballpoint pen only.
Follow invigilator’s instructions: Candidates must follow the invigilator’s instructions without argument.
Report errors: If there are any errors in the CLAT 2026 question booklet or OMR sheet, then students must report them immediately.
Report suspected cheating: If students witness any unfair practices, they should report them to the invigilator right away.

Do not enter late: Entering the exam hall after 2:15 PM is not allowed.

Do not leave without permission: Leaving the exam hall between exam is not permitted. In case of any urgency, ask the invigilator’s permission before leaving.
Avoid tampering with question paper: Opening the sealed envelopes before the exam starts is not allowed. Additionally, altering, tearing, marking or writing notes in the question booklet is considered misconduct. Candidates can underline passages but marking, ticking, circling or underlining answers are not allowed.
Do not bring unauthorized materials: Electronic devices such as mobile phones or smartwatches are not allowed. Candidates must avoid bringing notes, papers, notebooks or water bottles that are not transparent in the exam hall.
Avoid Communication: Candidates must not communicate with other students in the exam hall. Gestures or passing notes will be considered a violation of the code of conduct.
Do not impersonate anyone: Appearing for the CLAT 2026 exam as someone else is a serious offence. No candidate should write the exam on someone else’s behalf.
Candidates must appear for the CLAT 2026 in an acceptable dress code. The following list details the dress code
Candidates must wear simple, light-coloured clothes.
Avoid carrying bags, pouches or wallets in the exam hall.
Candidates should not wear accessories such as nose rings, chains, badges, belts, sunglasses, caps etc.
They should wear half-sleeved shirts without slogans, big buttons or badges.
Avoid wearing shoes and instead wear sandals or slippers.
Candidates can underline passages in the question booklet as per the code of conduct. However, making notes, underlining, ticking, or marking answers on the question paper is not allowed. It might be considered an unfair practice which leads to disciplinary action.
There is no official bag storage facility at CLAT exam centres. Candidates should avoid carrying bags to the exam hall. However, some centres have designated storage facilities, but candidates are responsible for their belongings. Students can either not bring any bag or luggage or leave it with a trusted person outside the exam centre.

With AIR 10542 and OBC rank 1843, getting top NLUs is unlikely. However, you still have chances in newer or lower ranked NLUs like NLU Assam, NUSRL Ranchi, MNLU Nagpur/Mumbai, especially in later or vacancy rounds. Also consider good private law colleges as backup options.
Since you scored 8000 AIR in CLAT, getting into top NLUs may not be possible, so it is a good idea to look for affordable and good law colleges.
